How Many Patches Used When Cleaning Your Rifle?

Far fewer than I used to, probably about 10-12 total now. 2 to 3 patches with my chosen pre-cleaner, 30ish strokes with a brush with my chosen cleaner on it, then another 5 to 7 to clean out the gunk and finally a couple with my chosen oil. In all fairness I use a few more patches when cleaning out the action and inside my bolt so let's just call it 15-17 for a fully clean and ready to go gun and that's the high number.

I clean after every range session no matter how few or many rounds I shoot and I go back to pretty much bare metal every time I clean.

It depends. On the high power rifles about 25-30 patches. On the rimfires about 15 or so. Depends also on if I decide to use a brush also, which I don't always do.

After a match, about 60 rounds typically, with the barrel still warm, I use 4-5 wet patches. This is followed by two (2) applications of Wipe-Out Foam 20 minutes apart. The barrel is then plugged at chamber and muzzle. Then a few hours later, I will patch out the Wipe-Out with 5-6 patches. The amount of brushing needed is VERY minimal -- you folks would not believe how little brushing is needed. YMMV, but one of our club members switched to this system and he probably brushes 70% less and his barrel life has improved 30+%. This is with a 6BR and 6BRA type cartridge. If you're shooting a large F-Open cartridge that's a different game.

I've been mining copper out of the bore of my "old freaking Ruger 270" for a week now with Boretech, and have used a whole pac of patches. AND I'm still coming out blue. I'm using a nylon bore brush, let soak for awhile, then patch till dry. Will it ever stop. jd

jd, to get that puppy clean with copper OUT, try some of Holland's Witches Brew. It works on those stubborn barrels that get much cussing because they won't ever seem to get clean. It's one of those little secrets that seldom gets talked about, but it plain works.
