How Hot is Your Barrel

bigfish27
Are you shooting with the thermal strip. May touch the barrel occasionally , most of the time I just look at the label .

We cool our barrels often, and after 2500-3000 rounds, barrels look very, very good in the Hawkeye. We load and shoot right at the rifle range. There are huge benefits to cooling your barrel in terms of barrel wear, and perhaps the biggest advantage comes from not shooting the barrel too hot.

It is amazing how good the throat in a 6.5x47 lapua looks at 3000 rounds.

I built a small building that is insulated with Heat and AC that we shoot out of year round.

Here is the rack built in front of the air conditioner. Rifle is placed in the cooling rack in front of the AC while the next rounds are loaded.

I just bought a Lyman bore scope , it's not a Hawkeye but does the job. My 308 has 2600+ through the tube but using the scope and new to looking inside the barrel , l don't know what the barrel looked like when it was new , how do you tell normal to worn out . My barrel is a RockCeek M24 5R stainless steel , the throat area and the beginning of the rifling there is some fire cracking but don't know what normal or bad looks like . I don't let my barrel get too hot , I take about two hours to shoot 30 rounds and I don't load hot , my reloads are on the low side of the scale for Im shooting 200 yards . The thermal strip on my barrel is working well in stopping over heating .

I'm sure there are many ways but you want to know how hot the barrel is getting so you can slow down on shooting if possible to an let it cool . The strip could help in knowing if it shoots better at a certain temperature .

Has anyone used a gel cooling pad or ice wrap to speed up the process?

I sometimes drape a few damp paper towels on the barrel but after reading this thread and thinking about it I think I will make or buy a battery operated chamber cooler
