Hot Rod 6mm.....which one?!?!

Thanks again guys, all great idea. I think the 6 Creedmore and 6 SLR are on the top of my list.

get the Creedmoor. it sure seems to be the cool thing to have these days.

chuck

just had a 6 Creedmoor built and it is fun and accurate - would be boring to shoot if I did not mind the little groups it makes on paper. Just breaking the barrel in and finding a load and H4350 and RL17 with the Berger 105 Hy are shooting great. Plus it goes with the 6.5 Creed I have. Had a hard time making up my mind 6Creedmoor, 6CM, 6SLR or 6x47 Lapua...went with the Creedmoor, but honestly went with Creed just because I like the 6.5. I think any of these would be a lot of fun to shoot.

What kind of velocity are you getting??

How much velocity would he gain by going with a 6-284 over a 6slr with the 24" barrel restriction?

6 AI or 243 AI. Just a tick apart in ballistics, not enough to really give the nod to either one.

Check Lapua/Norma/Nosler brass prices and make your choice from there.

About 300 fps, is my guess. Another benefit of the 6-284 is the Lapua brass availability.

All good stuff guys! I appreciate the comments. It sounds like there really isn't a bad way to go. Pushing a big 6mm bullet in the 3100fps range equals a lot of fun shooting at long range.

Decisions....decisions.....

Anyone know where I can get a 3 or 4 taper Bartlien in an 8 twist???

I'm just an amateur compared the majority of these guys, but I've been supremely pleased with the 6XC I had Mark Pharr put together for me earlier this year. Super easy to load for, and has been the least drama with the greatest results of any rifle I've ever owned.

As for the barrel, I was bored and did a little digging. I found barrels on both sides of what you're looking for... grizzly.com has a #3 and Robert Whitley (RCW3 here) has a Sendero contour. If you're going to run the 115's, I'd recommend going with faster than 1:8 unless you know for sure you're going to run a 243 Win or similar.

Sweet thanks! Only be doing 105s tops.

I've been playing with some of the faster 6's I have a 6mm Rem, 243, 243wssm, 6-284 and am currently building a 6mmAI on a long action, If you want to stick with a short action I would go 243AI no problem with overall length, my 6mm and 6-284 are both on SA although the 6-284 is a single shot so I don't have a OAL problem.
Also using the 243AI great brass and dies are readily available,

I have been getting the itch to get a 6mm myself. I keep thinking 243AI or 6XC or 6SLR, mine is going to be a short action repeater so I think about the XC or SLR for the shorter COAL. Lots of info to go through in this thread!

I will give you a good price on a set of brand new never used Redding comp Die set for your 243 AI. :)

For the good fast 6mms, I have been very happy with the 6mm Crusader and 6mm Competition Match. The fireforming part was a major drag but if you like that then you can get some very good performance.

If you want to run something standard, the 6mm Remington is a great round with the right throat and twist rate.

None of the Cartridges mentioned in the OP will function within the factory mag box length of a Rem SA with a 105-107gr bullet seated with the base @ mid neck lengths. If you want a "HOT ROD" you "want" the longer barrel length 28"+ otherwise you're just p*****g in the wind. I love the 6-284 (3 of'em) but in a 24" (my walking rifles bbl length) barrel it's pathetic, you need to run faster powders (which don't fill the case) so you DON'T need the capacity and that goes for the 243 AI and 6mm AI as well. I don't have 1 but I'd look hard at the 6 Dasher, 6 BRDX, or straight 6 BR for a 24" bbl length. Just my 2 bits

I agree with CJ6 and would like to add the 6BRX to his suggestions for a 24" walking Rifle!
Having said that; None of those combos are as good shooting PD's in the wind at 1000yds as my 6-284 Shehane, 29" Krieger, N165 powder, 17# rifle from bench!

How bout a 6mm WSM or a 6mm RSAUM

Those will fit in a short action.

A member here was talking in another thread about 3900fps. with a 105 Amax in his 6WSM,thats getting` it.....

I think "3900 fps with a 105" is highly exaggerated.
