How bout a 6mm WSM or a 6mm RSAUM

Those will fit in a short action.

A member here was talking in another thread about 3900fps. with a 105 Amax in his 6WSM,thats getting` it.....

I think "3900 fps with a 105" is highly exaggerated.

Whether or not 3900 MV out of a 6 WSM with 105 AMax bullets is achieved, if you don't get the rate of twist correct, the bullets will never survive.

I could get 3250 to 3300 MV out of a 243 WSSM, 30" Krieger 8 twist. But at 3300 MV, a lot of the 105 AMax's would blow up.

First off: 3900FPS on a 105 Amax is a figment of someones imagination! Not even close to any Reality!

I've been shooting them for years through 28 to 30" Krieger 8 and 9 twist barrels. I've shot em in 6-284, 6-284Shehane, 6mm Rem, 243, 243 Ackley, 6mmWSSM, and 6BRX's! Loaded them all up to max (where brass has too short of life, around 65,000 PSI) I use N165, RE22, RE25, & H1000 in the big ones.

The fastest of the bunch I listed is the 6-284Shehane @ 3400!
6-284 @ 3350
6WSSM or .243 Ackley @ 3300

Nomad,

Another bit of information; I've found on the Hornady 105gr AMAX (and I think this also applies to the Berger 105 VLD)

AT 3200 FPS and above You don't need an 8 Twist to stabilize! They will stabilize perfectly and provide bughole accuracy with a 9 Twist barrel!
My 6-284 Shehane is a 9 Twist shooting 105 Amax at 3400 and I've not had them blowup!

On the other hand, When I'm building a 6 BR, 6 BRX, or Dasher to shoot the 105 AMAX or VLD at 2800 to 3050 FPS I always use an 8 Twist!

Just some food for thought!

Exactly my point, Spears. That is why I said at 3900 MV (which I agree is not possible even out of a WSM case) the twist rate had better be reduced.
What matters is the RPMs of the bullets. And after I blew up some a couple year ago, I called Hornady. And they confirmed that at 3300 MV and above in an 8 twist, you could expect some bullets to blow up.

I've been shooting a Howard Wolfe smithed 6-284 for 15 years now....700 long single shot 1-10 Hart 30" Berger 90 and it chronographs at 3625 with 54 gr of R22....so im thinking 3900 is a bit off the chart. It shoots in the .2's consistently and has sent many chucks to the happy hunting grounds.

Just my .02. When the 243wssm came out I built one for my oldest daughter. Running 70nosler bt at just over 3700 with 4064. Shot lots of pdog in S Dakota. The gun has over 3k on the Krieger 10twist In the past 6 yrs. I now shoot 90gr nosler accubond at 3370 with imr 4350. All with a 21" barrel. I clean it often and never did over heat it. Still shoots under .5" and has also over 1100" of whitetail horn under its belt. The chamber is a no turn neck, and with a longer barrel, I'm sure there's more speed to be had. Oh, on a side note, Ive also necked the case up to a 30 cal. With a 30* shoulder. Turn the necks and build that one for my youngest daughter for deer. That round is very impressive. Again my .02

Consider the 6x250AI, runs the 105 @3200 with REloader 17 @ 42 grs. with plenty room in the magazine, but you do need an eight twist as a nine will not stabilize beyond 900 yds. Been shooting it a lot lately in tactical matches, with a good muzzle brake you can easily see bullet impact, the recoil is like a .223 with a brake.
Also with a 14 twist barrel and a 70 gr Ballistic Tip 3700 is easy, with ballistics nearly matching the 105 out @ 800 yds.
6mm AI have too mush case capacity fot the 105 or anything else I've shot in them
The 6x250AI is the original 6 Creedmoor.

i have a 7 1/2 twist 30" hot rod , what is the lightest bullet i can shot in it ? without blowing the bullet up . barrel about gone and i want to start shooting p. dogs with it would like to use nolser , v-maxes blitz kings all in 6mm

I have shot Sierra 80gr Blitz @ 3600fps from a 6-284 and 3500fps from a 6 Remington with no problems and I think Blitz Kings use the same jacket

Mark,,(reply-51) ,,,how ruff/smooth the bbl is determins which bullets can take it more than the vel.....I have found the entire line of Sierra bullets can take more than any other,,,Roger

I agree, if your going to run light bullets in a fast twist. I'd run Seirra BK bullets. They have sturdy jackets. I've run the 70 gr BK at 3550fps from my 8T 6x47L but when I get the chance, I'm going to try crack 3700Fps plus with them.

xswanted,

Did you ever settle on a round?

I did a lot of research a couple of years ago on the 6's. What I wanted was a 105 class bullet at above 3000fps. Now there are a pile of different 6's that will do this. I wanted something easy, so it took the AI's out, because i didn't want to waste money on components and barrels before I can even have fun. Lots of good ones out there, do the research. Right now if i were going to do it all over again, i'd probably go with a 6 Competition Match or a 6SLR.

But I would probably do the SLR again because it's just so darn easy and fun to shoot. Fireforming just isn't fun.

Isn't that the truth about the SLR, Easy to load and FUN to shoot! I keep thinking dasher but will probably rebarrel the SLR when the time comes. Should pass 2000 this summer and right now it just keeps humming along. Just need to find some bare dtacs now. Waiting for spring!!! Eric in DL

Cakes,
Why the dtacs? The berger 105 hybrids have a better bc and you can push them a bit faster.
Has your velocity starting to drop off at all? Have you scoped itat all, id be interested in seeing what it looks like. Also what are you loading bullets and powder?

For me my pet load was always H4350 & 107smk's @ 3120' great midrange load with es's of 8-15. Spent way to much time with the 105 hybrids and numerous combinations of everything and while it was fast with very low es's, the vertical and grouping just wasn't equal to the 107's with this particular barrel. got hold of some bare Dtac's and loaded them up with H1000, H4831sc, H4350. 4831sc @3010' was a eye opener. Shot a bit flatter at 600 and es's of 5-8' and excellent vertical and grouping. Will start out this year shooting that load at 600 if I can find some more bare 115's. Don't have a borescope and don't want to look as the velocity is holding and it still shoots! If it ain't broke don't go looking :) Eric in DL
