Hornady One Shot Lube.

I have a question for those 1000 yard Rifle shooters. Does using Hornady One shot dry lube in the neck affect your ammo consistancy or accuacy?

Loading brand new Lapua Brass I ussually run the neck through a K&M Expander Mandrel to get the necks round and pushed out to get the correct neck tension. I have been using Graphite dry neck lube but it had been grabbing brass as it goes along. So then I used good ole Imperial sizing wax that works wonderfully like it always has. The only issue is that I then have to Vibratory tumble them to get the lube out of the neck.. I.E. an extra step in the proccess. I happen to buy a can of Hornady One shot and tried it in the necks.... Wow that worked out really well. It was super slick for running the mandrel into vigin brass necks. Quick Spray and let it dry for a few seconds and away you go.
Having never used this stuff before I wonder if I need to tumble yet or is it OK to load my ammo with the dry lube in th enecks and cases? Will it affect the neck tension or friction if you will. Will it affect the burn rate or somthing slilly inside the case?

FWIW - - I don't remove it after I use it to neck up brass, for neck turning, etc. and I never noticed any issues. I don't spray it in the necks, I spray it on a Q-tip then stick the we Q-tip in the neck and twist the case in my fingers.

Russ, Like you I'm always concerned about sizing lube residue. I spray one-shot w/ cases in loading block. 1st one side then turn block 180* & a 2nd pass, both at about 45*. After sizing I mount a nylon bore brush in a drill & spin it in the direction that the spiraled brush "pulls" residue from the neck, occasionally wetting the brush w/ alcohol. Then wipe down the outside of case w/ alcohol. More labor intensive than tumbling but, a lot faster in the long run. Just another way to skin the cat :) No noticeable problems w/ uniform seating pressure but I use a Rockchucker rather than Arbor press.

Sounds as if everyone else is getting rid of the lube in the necks and inside the case prior to loading in one form or anther too. I just cant have any issues with it.. I spend way to much time and considerable amount of money to travel and shoot large Matches across the country. Guess Ill just toss them in the tumbler and get it over with. Not the end of the world by any means, Just thought I would ask to see how everyone else is handling the issue or if there is even an issue at all.

Thanks for all your input. Great place to share information as ussual.

If you develop your loads with the residue still in there, don't clean it out. If you develop your loads with the necks swabbed clean and dry, clean and dry. Either way will work. Be consistent.

I guess I'm the odd man out, but I have been using One Shot for 10 years and have never cleaned it off in any way. Just spray the cases as described above by gotcha, let them dry a bit for a minute or 2, then start loading. It has never caused any trouble.

According to Hornady it has NO effect on powder or it's burning. I've noticed that cases I've lubed with One-Shot have bullets that are easier to pull if I have to pull them. My guess is that it might make the bullet release more uniform when the cartridge is fired by preventing cold welding.

Now if I could just shoot well enough for that to be the ONLY factor 8)

I have been using Oneshot for several years and I like it a lot. Hornady says that it has no affect on Powder or Primers and I think that's true,. I believe that it helps seat bullets more consistently>.. I like full length dies and it certaintly helps the (carbide floating)expander button slide easily back thru the neck. My Gunsmith is a very successful Benchrest shooter and he uses full length dies and he has been using Hornady Oneshot for several years also. I do put a little Alcohol on a paper towel and wipe it off the outside. I don't try to get it out of the inside of the neck....If you have any doubts, do a little experimenting and I believe you will be pleasantly surprised...Hope that helps...George

+1 on that approach

Like the man said, whichever you do, do it consistently. I swab inside with a Q-tip, putting as thin a coat as possible on. Lubed and un-lubed seat with different forces (I have the K&M gauge press), but as long as you don't mix them you should be fine.

I personally have doubts whether cleaning the necks afterward (I don't) will make much difference unless it is done very, very thoroughly. It doesn't matter if the lube coat in the neck is one micron thick or ten. If there is even the thinnest layer of lube on the neck wall, it will reduce the bullet-to-neck friction by the same amount as a thicker layer. It would be similar to removing the carbon layer, which does give you some lubricity. It doesn't matter if the carbon layer is 1 firing thick or 10 firings thick, you get copper bullet against carbon friction. Only if you remove the carbon entirely do you get copper bullet against brass friction.

I have not had success with the One Shot case lube, having stuck cases with it.

I have resorted to either Lee Toothpaste Tube Lube or the Imperial anymore and feel that I am getting better results.

I stuck ONE case in a die using One-Shot. Then I went back and read the instructions that came with the die.

It was a hornady die and they said to first clean the die and then give it a good spray of One-shot.

I didn't and the case stuck. After I extracted it, I followed the instructions for both die and case lube. Haven't had a stuck case since.

It dries to a pretty thin film so there's not a lot of latitude like with the wax or greasy lubes.

I agree with the above.

The easiest way to clean brass if your concerned is to soak it in laquer thinner, or acetone. I put it in a quart jar and agitate it for a few minutes, lightly. Take it out and the cleaner flashes off quickly.

Hornaday states the one shot does not afffect powder and I have never had an issue.

I'm in the spray and forget about it camp. I spray it size it and as it come out of the sizer I wipe the outside of the cases off with an old wash rag, then use a nylon brush on all the necks and load'em up.

Good luck..I can't imagine trying to use anything else.

Well Maybe this is a plus for me. I dont clean the powder residue out of my necks as I fell I get better and more consistant neck to bullet releases which in turn gives me good SD and ES figures for long range ammo. So NO Stainless media or Sonic cleaning brass for me. I see and here alot of success both ways, this is just the way I feel and do it. Right or Wrong it works.

So if I leave the one shot in the necks Maybe ( just maybe) I will be a little closer to my once fired brass vs the Virgin Brass consistancy. Right now I ussually shoot the Vigin Brass at 600 yards and then move them out to use at 1000 yards after they have been fired once. Hmmm? Wish I had more time to test.

What I have been doing has been working.. hate to change anything without testing it.

I've only been using one shot for about 2 months & so far no issues. But I cant get out of the habit of tumbling it in the corncob for 15-30 minutes afterwards. Maybe I'm OCD but it makes me feel better to still tumble.

Like they used to say in the 60's, "If it feels good, Do It!"

The only time that I have ever had a case stick with One Shot, is when I did not let it set for a minute or so before trying to size it. The lube has to dry a bit to work correctly I think.
