I did not know these were made--they are a fun easy addition to your steel shooting at long range--They are cheap--Bluecollar has a 5 pkg for about $35 They are rechargeable--you simply strap it on the post that you have your steel hung on and when a bullet hits the vibration makes these light up for a second--it is Very bright--you can see it at 1000 yds
We attended a Long Gong match Sat and they were using them--it added some fun to the match
I had no idea they were even made --so thought others might be interested

My plates swing off of hooks attached to a horizontal bar. Do you think it would detect movement if attached to the horizontal bar?

We've tested them at the club. They work off the shock of a bullet hitting the plate. It's not movement they pick up, but the "clang." HIt the plate with a crescent wrench and they'll trigger.

Other manufacturers make similar items, but IMNHO, Hornady offers the best value and performance. Here's a review of three comparable hit indicators:

How often are they hit?
No direct hits yet. I don't know exactly how big the rebar frame is but roughly 2'x2' and the indicator is on the top right hand corner. He welded a piece of angle iron to the frame to protect the unit from the bottom and side from any bullet splatter because I think that's what knocked out one or two last year. Then he welded a piece square tubing vertically to the angle iron and that's what the unit attaches too.

Our club uses indicators that magnetically attach to the backside of the plate and have a plastic prism that sticks past the edge of the plate to view the indicator light when the plate is struck. Prism is replaceable if struck. These units were early ones and each one was more expensive than the 5 packs from Blue Collar.

I made up aluminium dog leg brackets and used adhesive Velcro on the bracket and back of the plate.

The dog leg bracket offsets the HIT indicator so the front of the light is flush with the back of the plate. When you have impacts the shrapnel doesn't go behind the plate so the light is protected.

One thing to be careful of is having multiple gongs set up at exactly the same distance. Shrapnel can fly off and hit neighbouring gongs and lights which can cause damage and unplanned illumination. Best to stagger plates that are close to one another.

Left a few turned on for over 24hrs and they still worked so there isn't any standby timer or much power consumption.
