Hornady .300 Win Mag brass

Hey Gents! Been looking all over the place for .300WM brass, and the Hornady stuff seems to be about all there is out there, other than the spendy Nosler stuff.

I usually run Winchester brass where I can, and have no experience with the Hornady stuff. Anybody have anything they care to share with me about Hornady brass?

Thanks in advance!

Smiitty

I was able to get primed fc brass from a local. If your interested I can check. It ran 65cents a piece. I've never been a big fan of hornady brass. Seems to give up primer pockets faster than others

General conscious is Hornady brass is a little too soft, not a problem if you're not intending to push things to the limit.
I use salvaged Hornady range brass exclusively in a 223 and have excellent case life.

I was in the same boat only hornady brass around! it looked okay but loaded a few and bullets you could pull out with your fingers? ran them back into die I always use and they were okay but after 2 months I could then move some of the bullets in the case again. I have since ran them into bushing dies and so far they are okay. this brass is super soft!!

I just bought some Hornady in .264 WM. I had a choice of Winchester, Hornady, or Norma, and I went for the Hornady. Have not loaded or fired it yet, so can't comment on that part. The flash hole has significant "flash" on the inside which should be reamed out. The Creedmoor PRS shooters that can't get Lapua, seem to all use Hornady as the second choice after Lapua, so it can't be too bad.

Brass work hardens as you fire it, and of course the case and head can't be annealed. So, it will be softest when new, and gradually get harder and stronger. That would suggest deferring the hotter loads until you have a few firings on the brass.

I had an issue with the pockets going soft after one or two reloads and my loads are not even that hot. I know that is a sign of over pressure to most people but my Norma brass could handle it. So.... I just use Norma brass which sucks a little bc I really like Hornady. JMO.

As a bit of an update, I have loaded and fired a few of these 264WM Hornady brass rounds. I did have an issue with one loaded round. The cartridge jammed in my gun, and after a bunch of measurements, I found that the large diameter of the shoulder had bulged out a bit, and was the tight spot causing the jam. They were sized before loading, and obviously the bulge occurred as the result of my bullet seating process. My seating technique may not have been the best, but it does appear this brass is on the softer side. May not be suitable if you are using a very tight bullet to neck fit. The offending case was fine after I sized it again. Since the brass in this area will toughen up with firing and no annealing, the problem is most likely to show up on the initial load of the new brass.

I've bought the .308 match cases and have good and bad luck with them. I use them because they seem to allow a hotter load than the Lapua. The problem is the last box was not real straight. After resizing and neck turning they were still from .005-.009" runout on the necks. I had to anneal them to be able to straighten them out and are now .002"-.003" on the necks. The few I fired un-annealed showed soot on one side of the necks and the other side was spotless. After annealing, resizing, I ran the neck turn cutter over them again. Nothing cut until I got to within 1/8" if the shoulder, then they cut on one side only showing the necks were not concentric. I'm sure they will straighten out after firing. The other 3 boxes I got of the same part number (different lots) were fine. Just one of those things I guess.

My only experience with Hornady brass is in the 223 Rem in a bolt rifle. It has performed well for me. At 12 reloads it's still performing well.

I have 4 loadings on some hornady 300 win mag brass. 185gr berger with 78.5grs of h1000 behind it 2965fps. Pockets are still tight and going strong. I wouldnt hesitate to buy a couple hundred cases.

different calibers may be different but I tried some in my 243 and the primer pockets would not hold a primer after 2 loads with 40 grs H4350 and the 105 VLD,,,,I have been running 42.2 grs H4350 in WW brass at 3225 fps and on 6th load pockets are still tight,,

a friend of mine gave me a box of the Hornady Superformance factory ammo and it shot really well but that brass was toast after one shot as it wouldnt hold a primer after it was once fired,,

I tried making 243 brass from the Lapua Palma brass and it will take a really stout load but I cant get rid of the vertical so I am going back to WW brass for the 243,,

my older brother has some RWS brass he uses in his Win Mag and it is really good if you can find it,,
