Hornady 180 gr ELD Match SAGA...

When Hornady 1st released these Bullets the world was On Fire, at least until they started to blow up. They still seem to be rated the best in the weight column. So My question is did anyone pin down the perfect FPS and Twist rate for these Bullets? I'm interested for a 8.5 Twist Barrel 08.

I shoot both 180 and 162 from 7mm Saum. 60.0 H1000 WITH 162, 2930 and 60.6 H1000 WITH 180, 2930. Great accuracy and never a single blowup with any ELDM over a wide range of calibers. However, I shoot 5 shot strings. 8.5tw Kreiger at 31 inches. Long strings in the heat may be different story. Some have witnessed that. For my kind of shooting (300-1400 yards) the 147, 162, and 180 may be very under rated and I say that being a Berger fan.

I might add that I had a 7-08...8.75tw a few years ago that shot the 162 really well. No experience with 08 and 180's though!

I have shot them from a 9 twist at up too 3350fps no issues
I shot them from an 8 twist and had issues when I got over 3125fps
I shot them from a 7.75 twist and had to keep them under 3000fps or they would blow.

If you put them in the right package they are ridiculous and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot them

Ditto that....as I mentioned, 147, 162, 180 great BC's, great accuracy! I don't torture them and they do the job for me!

So far I have had 4 not make it to the target (600 & 1000yrd) of the 2000 I have shot. I don't run them hard 2800 fps in a 30 inch 8 twist bartlein 5R out of my 284 F-Class rig. I have since changed to the Berger 184 Hybrid. Just cant afford to take a miss in competition.

I have never run them from a 5r.... Could be something there?? All mine have been Krieger and brux regular barrels

Just like speed and twist, these bullets are sensitive to a bore that is any tighter at all than standard. If you have a barrel that needs a somewhat lower charge than others of the same twist, the bore is probably tighter. I had a very accurate barrel that required modest down charging to preserve brass, and I found out at a big match that these bullets didn’t survive it, especially once hotter mid string.

Not a speed / twist / blow-up question, but what sort of jump do these bullets like to the lands? I have a 31-inch Bartlein 9-twist 7-08 throated long which handles the similar 160gn Sierra TMK very well, but am minded to try the 162 ELD-M in it.

I run the 180 ELDs in my 8.7 twist Bartlein 5R 7mmRM at around 2900fps pushed by H1000 and never had a blow up. Very accurate and great BC.

Laurie the ELDs like .020" jump but don't mind more. I load the 162s in another 7mmRM with a 9.5 twist.

Running them in my 7RM 28” Bartlein 1:8 twist @ 2950. Have been very accurate with multiple hits at a mile. I do like Berger’s but these 180’s will shoot and are easier on the wallet with a great BC.

I tried about 700 of them in a .284 f open rifle with a 1-8.5 twist lots of seating depth and powder testing no blowups in the 2830 fps range they just don't group well or score well compared to bergers. I suspect Hornady's jackets are not very concentric compared to the competition which leads to greater dispersion over a string, I am curious if they improved the jackets for the new a tips.

Laurie, just an update. I'm becoming more and more fond of the 162 eldm. I settled in on a load for 7 rsaum with 59.2 H1000. Just touching lands. Four 5 shot groups shot on two different days....very slight crosswind....posted a .820 agg at 300 yards. Right now they are the most consistent bullets I'm shooting in this rifle. I'll post pics later. Let me know if you try them in your 7-08....they shot well in mine!

The 180gr ELDM's I've tried in my 7mm saum and 284 like them just touching the lands.. I've never loaded anything before these without a jump..
I only tried this way because a mate was shooting them touching with superb results....
I've still got lots of 162gr amaxs to bother trying the 162gr ELDM's yet.
