Hodgdon Universal Clays powder

Help,

So when I go to the Hodgdon reloading page do I use date from Universal powder or Clays.
I am loading for a 357 Mag with 125 JHP bullets.
My powder says Universal Clays.

Thanks Jeff

They are different. Use the data for universal clays.

It works great in pistol calibers too just use the correct data

Right. Clays is faster. For example, Lyman's 50th shows, for 38 Special:

158 gr lead Universal 4.2 gr @ 760fps
and Clays 2.6 gr @ 783fps
Starting loads

And, even though the bottle says "Universal Clays", I just call it Universal to not confuse it with Clays.

Thank you all

Clays is like Bullseye and Universal Clays is like Unique in the burn rate for comparison. Either of the "Clays" burn WAY MORE cleaner than the others mentioned. I have loaded a lot of 38 Special with 158 gr lead SWC with Clays. Very accurate and clean.

I use clays as a substitute for bullseye in a 45 if i need it. But it is much slower- i actually run 2x the charge of clays against bullseye

In retrospect, I’m sure Hodgdon is regretting their decision regarding naming these 3 powders. Yes, there are 3.

Clays — which is similar to Red Dot, Bullseye, and WST in applications.
International Clays — which is similar to Green Dot in application.
Universal Clays — which is similar to Unique, WSF in application

it should be noted that International Clays has very limited use in pistol reloading because it is very touchy about loading densities.

why Hodgdon used these names is unclear, but there has been much confusion over the years. Even they have acknowledged it. So now they call them Clays, International and Universal. As separate entities. The correct data listing for your powder is “Universal”.

Clays is the best I have used for pistol rounds. very economical too
