All around powder?

Here is a question that i am sure will generate almost as many questions as answers. With the price increase on powders i have begun to look for a universal powder for use on 223 and up. While i know there is no one universal what i am looking for is information that may provide a decent to average powder for general use and use the more costly powders for matches, longer distance, or higher velocity. So what have others found as a adequate all around or general use for 22 to 7mm. thanks

Mike

Ditto - Varget - very successful recipies for 22-250, 6BR and 308. I'll probably try it in the 6.5 Creedmoor too. IMR 4895 has been good in all of these too...and I use it for fireforming brass for the 6.5.

IMR 4895 or Varget 223 up through 30-06 size cases and one of the 4350's from 30-06 size cases into the standard mag cases will get it done. I keep a lot of IMR 4895 and AA 4350 myself.

I have always said if I can only have one powder I want it to be 4350, rather it has a AA, or IMR, or H in front of it.....

"How about tac? I use both single stage and progressive presses?"

TAC works very well for progressives and is very accurate. I keep Varget and 4350 as my main powder for rifles. One of those always seems to work great for almost everything. For pistol if I had only one it would probably be 231 or unique.

I use IMR 4895 for .223, 22-250, 7mm-08 and anything else that comes along. It really works well for me. The only problem I am having is finding load data for .223 bullet weights. If any of you could help me out with this I would appreciate it.

Lots of data for the 223 with 4895.
What twist rate, and what weight bullet ?
I'll hunt you up a few..
IE-- 68 grain BTHP Match + 24.2 gr IMR 4895 = 2800FPS is a good start..
You'll need at least a 10 twist for that one..
55gr SP + 25.9 gr IMR 4895 = 3100FPS another good start load...

I am shooting 60 grain nosler Partitions. The load I am using is probably pretty low. I would like to see a published max load for the 60's. Thanks for the info!

B&W

Hodgen now owns IMR. Go to the Hodgen Reloading center and you'll find some data for IMR as well.

They list 25.2gns of IMR-4895 as a max load for the 60gn V-Max.

I've used varget for the .223 for bullets from 55 to 80gr. And I've used varget for the 6mmBR with the 105/107gr bullets. Although, I haven't used Varget for a 7mm since I no longer shoot 7mm, I've used Varget for the 308W and I suspect it would work well with the 7-08.

Ditto the 4350,H, IMR, AA in order of preference) but if you like spherical powder go with H414. However if you are a target shooter there is bound to be someone you shoot with that buys or can buy Varget in bulk.
