Hey Fellas, your thoughts on a Cooper Excalibur

Hey there, I have a chance to buy a Cooper all stainless in 308. I'm going to use it manly for dear hunting but probably some varmint control also. What are your thoughts. I've never owned a Cooper.

Looked at that route also and not so much. Mark Penrod is the guy I would have do it and he's a year out and about twice as much. I would like to hunt with it this fall and with a half inch guarantee it sounds pretty good but I've never shot one. Just the action alone is half the cost of the Cooper.

The two coopers I owned were great rifles, both shot half inch. I've never own the Excalibur version but like it. You can't sell them for what you paid, seems like you lose about 20-25%, I bet you would enjoy it. I'd vote custom too but if your in a hurry Cooper makes a nice product.

I'm a dedicated Cooper fan as long as they are Model 38's or 21's. I just love the small calibers with small actions. Some time ago I decided to try a 280 Ackley. Cooper has one in the Excalibur model and I almost took it home. However, I opted for a Nosler 48 Liberty. I just couldn't justify the price difference for a rifle that sees infrequent use. I wish I had gone with the Cooper if only to increase my collection. But, I'm quite satisfied with the Nosler. They have a 1" MOA guarantee and mine does better with hand loads. I rationalized and used the savings by ordering another Cooper M38 :D
The safeties on the M38 and M21 are quite simple. On/Off. Just a small, spring-loaded toggle to the trigger. I don't even use the safety much as they are single shooters and I don't walk around with a round in battery. Can't speak to the safety on the Excalibur.
I'd say if you can get the Cooper for a good price, you won't be disappointed.

The coopers I own are small cal. and I am very happy with them. I have matched or bettered the test target with each. Get it you will like it.

I have several as well. No dought resale will be a loss. And finding a buyer that wants it.... I have matched or bettered their test target as well. You wouldn't be in the market for a custom shop 22BR would ya?
I bought a Stiller predator action, and now have 2 different camberings for it. Can't go wrong with that, and different stocks, triggers & barrels are plentyful.

As for the safety, it's a cam over type, and takes getting used to, only one company making aftermarket triggers for Cooper, so your limited there, as well as gunsmiths that will work on them. Cooper does offer some small calipers that are unique, and fun to shoot. That's my take on Cooper..

I would love to have a custom on a Stiller or Defiant action I'm just not the type to wait a year for one to be built. Lol. I've been looking for a good used one for sometime bet they are few and far between.

Sort of contemplated purchasing a Cooper model 52. Yes at 2500 I could build one easily as accurate and well built but just as I said considered it. Just because Cooper does make fine rifles. They make several models and many calibers as well. Haven't heard any regrets yet either on an unhappy customer. Haven't heard bad reviews on there safeties other than they are an adjustment to get used to.

I'm going to look awhile longer for a custom then I'm going to pull the trigger on the Cooper. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

I own an Excaliber in 243. It is one of the most accurate, best shooting and handling rifles I own. I have zero complaints regarding any part of the rifle, let alone the safety. I don't really know what there is to complain about with the safety. The only thing I would say is that the safety is not silent, it has an audible click when you take the gun off safety to shoot. This can be a disadvantage sometimes if an animal is close. Because the safety is a rocker type it is about impossible to move it slow enough to be unheard.
The Excaliber has a very high quality, well made magazine. They are fitted with Wilson barrels...Wilson owns Cooper. Mine will shoot one ragged hole at 100 yards with 95 grain Berger bullets. I have always had real good luck with Wilson barrels and consider them first rate.
Are there cheaper rifles that will do this??? Certainly. If you need/want to spend less then don't buy a Cooper. If you want a high quality, very accurate rifle that wont fail you in the field and will hold its value then buy with confidence.

Okay guys, I bought the Cooper Excalibur all stainless in 308. I should be here Friday. Will my 700 Sinclair's bore guide work in the Coopers action?

Good deal, I was going to get one ordered if it wouldn't work. Next thing I need to do is figure out what glass I'm going to put on it.

I wish that I had tried Cooper before going down the custom rifle rabbit hole. I think Cooper will hold value better than a "trued" 700 build. Send a range report.

Will do. I'm picking it up tonight and hopefully shooting it tomorrow. It has a really light barrel. I just hope it shoots as good as they say it should. If it does I'll be a happy camper.
