I just want to add , and I think most of you guys know how I feel about this, as an FFL, if I don't feel right about the sale - I can refuse. This is a thin line you have to dance. The guy that comes in tweaking saying he needs a gun to shoot the drones that are spying on him (yes it happened), I could have refused outright. I'm no psychiatrist, but I know crazy when I see it. Turns out he refused to give us his license and wouldn't fill out the 4473. I found out he was a felon later. So yes I discriminate, just not against race, age or sex (however that is friggin' described these days). if you are able to serve your country, then you are an adult and should be treated, respected or punished like one.

If a bakery can’t chose for whom they bake a cake, why should a a sporting goods retailer be allowed to decide who gets a gun?

I personally thing you should be able to run your business how you want to run it. Selling a firearm does have some strings that go along with it. I watched a company sell a person a rifle. This guy I would not have sold him a stick of gum let alone a firearm. Taking looks away what he said during the transfer was questionable at best.

With that being said yes if you are forcing one company then they should force the other.

What about the companies freedom? I get it we think it's all stupid and anti gun etc etc.
But we can't turn our backs on the fact that this company should have the freedom to set it's own rules to go by.
because dicks is a publicly traded company

That went out the window when the lil bakery lost the gay cake case

Gentlemen, Keep in mind that the Supreme court has heard the Phillips case (cake baking) and has yet to rule on it. In that particular case, there is the added dimension of freedom of religion (one of those other contrarian Amendments) that upholds the right of the citizen to freely exercise his conscience and religious convictions without the compulsion of the government to force him otherwise. There is a defining difference, and though some local "cake cases" have been adjudicated against the bakers (just writing that makes me laugh out loud at how stupid we are as a nation...the butcher the baker the candlestick maker comes to mind) the big case not only made it all the way, it has hope of falling in favor of freedom of religion. If it goes the other way, expect to be compelled to think in certain government approved ways...

Florida is hours away from stopping sale of any gun to under 21 persons. (Along with several other restrictions, some quite frightening).

My guess is, Dicks is doing poorly. Way overpriced for many things. If they get the anti-gun to buy other things, by siding with them, that they can make their profits rise more then what they make on guns. Sometimes it has to do with the CEO and his position on things. Look at Starbucks and his position on Muslims. They lost that much business that the stockholders said, get rid of him. Sometimes people can make a difference. Matt

Your comment reminds me of a quote I think was made by Einstein who said the intelligence of mankind is limited but the stupidity of mankind is infinite.

You mean a company that won't make a wedding cake with two guys on it? Something like that?

This whole "corporate" paradigm thingy in our country is a screwed up unconstitutional aberration that should be abandoned IMHO. The United States of America is a "corporation" that it should not be.
The whole concept of "corporations" leaves no "individuals" responsible or accountable for infractions of the law or The Constitution where some should definitely be held accountable "personally" and a lot of things would change in a hurry.
It all starts with what we call "money" which in fact is not "money" but rather "currency" all governed by the "private corporation" called the "federal reserve" which is neither "federal" nor a "reserve" at all.
What we call "money" is nothing but paper and ink with no intrinsic value at all, and The Constitution is just something people give "lip service" to keep the sheep believing it's still there.

Like a Christian Baker not baking a cake for a gay couple? The gay couple won a ton of money...

The Christian baker failed to properly "skirt" the issue...instead of blatantly saying no for the "wrong" reason he simply could have said "my ovens broke down and I wont have the part in time for your wedding, try the guy up the street". He would have had to close for a while to make it look legit, but that would have been a lot cheaper than what happened.
Pretty hard to prove discrimination in court this way, pretty hard to prove anything but the way the baker did it.

Edit: Don't get me wrong here...I am not suggesting it is right or acceptable to do things this way. Discrimination will always be discrimination. I don't understand how in this country certain individuals {businesses} have the right to refuse to work for someone {lawyers for example} while others have no choice but to say yeah and do it. Before I retired I was a manager that hired a lot of people for a big intelligence contractor. We had one response for people that called wanting to know why they didn't get the job..."you were not my choice" is the answer we were taught. It left them no where to go. If they tried us with a lawyer then it got down to proving "best man for the job". This was effective for the company, but others abused it. One manager quickly hired all retired Navy Irish alcoholics.

Why Dusty, They have laws where criminals can't buy guns. It's against the law. You know all criminals go to these dumbass stores to buy their weapons. We need more laws the criminals obey. Seems like these laws work perfect. Now let's all hold hands and sing cumbiya dance around the campfire and all our problems will go away all because we got "The Law". By the way, the sarcasm is not meant toward our LEO,Just the dumbasses that think up and allow these laws to be passed.
Well said, seems like the laws are doing more good for the scumbags than the citizens these days. Law makers just don't get it.(kind of like trying to explain something to my wife that she is dead set against)..........LOL

From what I see and hear Dick's would much rather sell butterfly nets than firearms. Don't look like there is much money it though

In my home town a Dick's and Field and Stream opened as a conjoined store (same corporate owner). All firearms/fishing/hunting related items are sold in the F&S side and Dicks is for sportswear and ball sports. Field and Stream is still selling rifles to adults under 21;). See what they are doing there.....

A state may enact a law that contradicts federal law as long
as the state law is more stringent, not less. A store doesnt have standing to enact a policy that contradicts either state or federal FFL regulations. LDS

They don't make the money in firearms, the money they make in the other areas far out weights that portion of there business.

True, however, selling firearms brings in traffic that might buy other items with more margin. My guess is they might stop selling firearms all together at some point. May as well given the positions they're taking

I'm sympathetic to your point Dragman. Freedom is paramount. The Bakery case was wrong, therefore, making Dick's sell to a group of people they've chosen not do business with would also be wrong.

Also, Dick's abandoning this customer base opens up opportunities for other businesses to get the sale.

But in the end, the wrongness of this is codified in Oregon law. It looks like Dick's is in violation of that

So how are they getting away with the sanctuary cities in a state? that is an inverse....... jim
