Help with mystery Remy

The 222 rimmed has a rim like a 38 Special - uses the 38 Special shell holder. The 219 has a head like a 30/30. Both larger than the .222 / .223 / .221 head. Someone asked if "new" 223 cases will fit, rather than fired ... Did I miss the reply?

Yes, both 222 and 223 factory new. unfired cases fit the bolt.

You asked the base ! Sorry , next time ask the .200 line .
It seems the rifle was based on a 222 . The 222.5 was very popular with some , and there were many variations of that also . Each smith ,shooter would have this or that reason for doing so . Some would have one reamer made , say for a 222 Mag and run in short , to there desired length .

There may be an alternative to a chamber cast. What if you took a .223 case well-lubed with sizing wax, and your .222 die, nudged the case in until it would just chamber in the rifle, but making sure the neck mouth isn't beyond the neck of the chamber (or be on the safe side and trim to .222 length), then loading it up with, oh, ten grains of Bulls Eye and fill the rest of the case with Cream of Wheat, then plug the mouth with wax ... NO BULLET. fire the sucker (at the range ... gonna be loud) and you have a case formed for the chamber. Fire a .222 load in the case and you should have something you could measure to determine the particular variant you have. This is if you're intimidated by making a chamber cast.

Thanks for all of the feedback. After discussing all of the options with my Smith, we decided to ream the chamber to a .223.

Funny no one has mentioned this...I am going to go way out on a limb here and suggest what if it has a real tight neck??? Wouldn't that cause the issue???

Since this is an unmarked barrel and the action has been modified, there is a better than average probability you have a custom chamber and may be something you would want to keep. It is also probable this is a tight neck and could be a 222 Rem Mag, 222.5, 222.7 or other variation. While the 223 may work it probably won't be as accurate as the chamber you already have. There really isn't a downside to doing a chamber cast and finding out what is there. What's the rush? Just do it.
