Help with first tripod

I’m looking for a multipurpose tripod. I am just starting out in 22 prs style comps this up coming year, and would like to be able to use this tripod for that. I shoot long range with cneterfire but never compete. This tripods main purpose will be for hunting/spotting. It will carry my spotting scope during fall deer seasons, and my varmint rifles during late fall/winter predator hunting.

Currently looking at a manfrotto mt055 pro 4 carbon with ball head or leofoto LS-284C+LH30PCL. I didn’t want to spend 1300 on a rrs set up if I don’t end up sticking with the comps. I figured I’m going need 2 tripods eventually if I do stick with it, keep one for spotter and hunting and deck out one for prs. I just wanted to be able to try working with a tripod and testing out all different sides of it before diving into the rrs.

What’s your thoughts?

Look at the Pig Tripods. They have a 26lbs load rating and very good reports from what Ive seen. I plan on ordering one in the next few months.

I purchased these back in the summer for range use and hunting. These where a major upgrade to what I was using. I know they are not the top line best out there but so far I am happy with them for the money.

Dan sources and sells some well made, affordable carbon fiber tripods. In order to keep prices out of the stratosphere, he does have to source them from overseas, and he’ll tell you that up front.
I have an early “no-name” from him that in use for PRS and spotting. I have no plans to replace it with anything else.

Check out the RTC90 Tripod on Amazon. 40mm carbon fiber legs, Very stable.
There is a guy (midwest industry?)
Making adapters to run RRS heads if you want. I've had mine for a couple years and it's solid.

I have a lot of tripods for photography, but for long range shooting I want something that will be SUPER RIDGID and finally broke down and bought a surveyors tri-pod. Over kill for my cameras, but not for a spotting scope trying to look out 1,000 yards.

For a shooting rest, I prefer the Primos trigger gen 3, tall version. The ones that you have to unlock the snaps to adjust legs. For me, they are too much fussing for hunting. Spotting scope is another application. I've bought cheapos and they didn't work.

Edit: It has some sort of gizmo adapter for other applications.

Good Morning Gentlemen,

I'm a daily lurker and infrequent poster.

I use a Manfroto 055 for photography work with both gimble and ball head mounts.
It supports my Nikon pretty well, even when it's wearing a 6.5lb. Sigma 150-600 lens and teleconverter
It's a nice tripod though I've never mounted a rifle on it.

90% of my shooting is BPCR Silhouette or BPTR and tripods aren't in the rule book.

This may ruffle some feathers, it's not my intention to do so.

Amazon sold / sells a tripod similar to this one without the pistol grip mount.

A number of years ago I bought one for use with my spotting scope.
It's HEAVY and strong. Many of the reviews alluded to Russian tanks.
It's much "stiffer" than my Manfroto and supports more weight.
It's never blown over, be it at Ridgway or here on the N Atlantic during a 'noreaster.
If the OP is interested, I'll search my past amazon orders and get an exact part number.
I feel it's a lot of tripod for very short money.

Hope this helps.

Craig

I use the Innorel RT-90C with the Innorell N52 ball head with a ARCA-Swiss rail on my blaster. They're both on Amazon and cost about $350. The tripod is rated for 88lbs and the ball head says 66lbs. So far I've shot steel out to 800 and it's damn near cheating it so easy. The tripod isn't light, but it's real sturdy and I'll take it with be for hunting in a blind.

One thing I'll add, with Manfrotto 055 legs, buy used. If you dont like them you can sell them for the exact same price you paid. They're pretty standard for us photogs. I've been using my Bogen 055 (manfrotto) legs with pistol grip head interchangeably between my photo studio work and the firing line with spotter for years. Its kinda the Honda civic of tripods. Btw, weight holding is more to do with the head than the legs. Plenty or replacement parts available to fix them, too.

I forgot to add, if you want a super stable, strong, no-nonsense tripod, jump on ebay and pick up a Tiltall tripod for under $100. These things are stout! Not light weight, but solid as can be. Add whatever head you want, if you want to upgrade, keep the head and sell the legs for what you paid.

I think I might go this route to start. Make a hell of a spotting scope tripod for when I change over. I was looking at the lt364c version of the innorel. 36 vs 40mm legs, slightly lighter and rated for 77lbs so still rock solid it sounds.

will the rrs heads not mount to these tripods?

I don't run a RRS just an ARCA clamp on the supplied bowl. I did some polishing on the bowl to get it to run smoothly. I know that Midwest Industry is making a replacement bowl for a reasonable price to run the RRS stuff. I may go that route in the future. But for now it meets my needs.
You'll really appreciate the 40mm legs on the RTC90. I had the other and sold it

Really! They look exactly the same spec wise minus a 36mm leg and a 40mm leg. 40 fairly beefy and I figured the 36 was still on the large side that it should do just fine and shave a few ounce as well.

okay thank you. Do you like the bowl? I kind of though general consensus is that a ball head is best for a wider range of movement, gets you up off the ground to the 5.5-7.5 range when in lowest position.
