Help: reloading 7mm PPC IMP

Hi, new to the forum here. I am trying to find some info for my dad. He has a Wichita arms chambered in 7mm PPC IMP. He was big into silhouette shooting years ago. Anyway, he’s been unable to find his paperwork for reloading this round. He’s got 220 Russian brass and the die set for the finished 7mm PPC IMP, but is hoping for some info on the loading specs... Ideal primer, powder type and grains, bullet weight, etc.

I’ve scoured the Internet and the closest info I can find is about 6mm PPC. Apparently this 7 PPC round is just a 6 PPC sized up to a 7mm bullet... but then the improved part throws a wrench into it because that’s usually a different shoulder taper angle and thus pressure. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Quickload has the 7mm ppc not the Imp, version listed. It looks like it needs faster powders than the 6ppc. Imr 4227 and possibly 4198 might be a good place to start with 100 grain bullets. Heavier bullets probably powders a bit slower. That's just using some generic dimensions etc. Hope this helps.

I have been here for years and have never Heard anyone even mention it. You may have better luck at one of the silhouette shooters sites. Steel chickens is the one that comes to mind, but i am sure there are more.

No it isn't. You have to buy it from neconos.com. pretty expensive and requires a lot of homework and specific details to be fairly accurate.

I shoot this caliber in IHMSA using the Wichita pistol. My load is 220 Russian case,cci 400 primer,162 ELD-X bullet, with 18 grains of 4227. I use to use the 139 gr sst bullet but I think the 162 is more accurate. Using new Lapua 220 Russian brass I had to turn the necks a little bit. I'm getting 1736fps with this load. It will take any "hard" set ram.
Still thinking about getting a rifle built & using it in 600 meter plate shoots.

Do you have a source for other loads in this caliber? The 4227 is an IMR powder right?

Yes I use IMR 4227. When I first got the gun there was a load included with it. 28 grains of IMR 4227 using the 139 sst. This load was very "hot". Don't recommend using it. Like you I have found there isn't much data out there. Might give Wichita Arms a call and see what they say.

This should have a case capacity very close to the Remington 7MM BR. This would be my starting point for load data. The PPC case is a bit smaller than the BR case, the Ackley version should bring the internal dimensions real close to one and other.

I'm totally new to reloading but just purchased 2 Wichita Engineering guns in 7MM PPC IMP. Unfortunately they don't have any reloading dies or any other info about setting up the cartridges for these guns. One is a Classic Pistol, the other is a Classic Rifle. Any advice you could give regarding toolling necessary and processes, even suggested reading would be appreciated!

I used to work at Witchita Engineering and Supply back in the 1978-1979 time frame just after I got out of college. Always wanted a Wichita Classic rifle (Just loved the look, but couldn't afford one at the time), so now I was fortunate enough to find one I liked, just that it seems to be an oddball load for it.

The dies I have came with the Wichita pistol. They are RCBS 3 die set. The first die is a 22 T 07 neck expander, 7MM PPC IMP, & the full length sizing for.
I use 220 Russian brass. On my gun the chamber is tight so I had to turn the necks. Neck thickness measures .012. Case length is 1.482.
My load is 162 ELD-X, 18 gr. Of IMR 4227, CCI 400 SR primer. My base to ogive is 2.660. I'm getting 1736 FPS. Barrel length is 14" to the bolt face.
I would think the guy at Wichita Arms could get a set of dies for you. As mentioned before use the 7 BR load data for your rifle. Reduce by 10 percent & work up.
