Help on case trimming

New to all of this. Haven't reloaded in 40 plus years for Metallica. So have a 308 lever action savage 99. Trying to make up loads for it. I have a lyman trimmer electric. One book says trim to 2.005 one doesn't say anything. I really can't get a perfect 2.005 I'm at 2.003 to 2.007. Overall length is perfect but I'll try different lengths. Am I over thinking the length? Yhanks for the help

Don't sweat it. Hornady lists 'trim to' length as 2.005", but maximum is 2.015". Quite a spread. I would just choose either the 2.003 or 2.007" and go from there. Consistency is more important than exact length. Either one should give you several firings before you grow to the point of needing trimming again.

I think SAAMI for 308 is 1.995 - 2.015, you are well within that.

What SSL said is what I would do however you probably should at least measure them after firing them because those old 99’s tend to have a lot of head space.

Don't worry about measuring them after firing. Measure after you resize them. If you push the shoulder back the neck will move with the shoulder.
