Help me trim .284 win

So I’ve been using a Frankfort Arsenal trimmer. The trimmer concept is nice but the parts are cheap. The plastic collet has galled and it’s not trimming square. I’m sure I can get a replacement collet but I want to reduce the number of steps in my reloading process. I want to trim, chamfer and deburr in one step. I called Giraud to order a couple of Tri-ways but they don’t offer one for 284. I guess the trimmer is different on the powered unit. I looked at WFT but they Have some comment about you cannot neck size. I called them and told them I do not turn necks but I use a neck bushing. He said I needed to send in some cases to have the trimmer custom honed. Doesn’t make sense to me, what if I change brass. This cannot be that hard.

I trim 100-400 cases at a time.

I uuse a WFT for up to 2000 308 at a time. I have two cordless drills with lyman chmfer tools in Sinclair adapters. I buzz thru those in short order.

Yes, it isn't as fast as a Gracey, but it isn't expensive either.

400? that is not a lot at a time

Do they even sell them anymore?
Creedmoor sells them, and parts can be ordered from them. Don't waste your time trying to reach Gracey directly - voice mail is full, e-mail isn't responded to, etc.; the one thing I didn't try was USPS.

The Gracey trimmer is gone from the site (change in the last 2 years), although they still sell case holders. They now have the Giraud for not much more than a Gracey was.

So the concern about neck sizing is BS?

Why would you have separate chamfer tools? I thought the WTF did it all at one time.

My WFT doesn't chamfer, though it is 7 years old.

I have an inside and outside tool, premounted in a Sinclair holder, so I don't have to switch tools or if my battery runs low on a tool, not as likely.

As far as neck turning, I don't understand why the WFT needs to be set up special (unless it now has some chamfer feature I am unaware of). It "headspaces" off the shoulder and trims the end of the case. Neck thickness should have nothing to do with it, in my thinking...but someone else can chime in if I am wrong.

so the Wilson only trims. Still need to deburr and chamfer.
Tried several deburr’s Wilson Redding RCBS and hands down the Sinclair carbide deburrer is the best

I also note that you said that the WFT says you can't neck SIZE. That is different than neck TURN.

Lucky for me I have all the holders I need for mine . I even had a custom done for the 20 TACTICAL.

From their website
IF YOU NECK SIZE

  • Send us the following information along with 3 of your neck sized cases:

We all neck size to some extent, whether bushing or full length resizing. Unless of course you only use a collet die. It indexes off the shoulder so I don’t understand the limitation. Unless the blades cannot be adjusted.

No reason it should, because it will trim any of the 308 family no problem..
I have a few of them, and even the 6.5x 47 will trim my 22 & 25 no problem.
Not even sure how neck size has any thing to do with it..
Unless they are referring to you can't just neck size, and depend on trimming to the shoulder...
You need a consistent shoulder for the WFT to work it's magic....

So, ironically I just finished doing 350 222 cases today. because of this thread I timed things.

The cases were 6 times fired, annealed but not yet sized. It was in rough shape.

I sized all, then ran them thru my corncob tumbler. Becuase I had used imperial in the necks I had to run a brush in the necks to dislodge crud and stuck cob. I used a 22 cal brass brush chucked in my drill.

When I was done I set about trimming, then chamfering.

I trimmed on a Wilson for my non 223/308 cases.

I did all of them in 40 mins. of trimming.

I then used my two drills running Lyman chamfer tools. I did the outside, transfering cases from one painters bucket to another. Then I grabbed the inside chamfer drill and did the insides, transferring back. I was done in 19 mins. I did not hurry.

I then switched the chamfer tool to a primer pocket uniformer and that took longer, 32 mins, to do all the cases, because it takes more time to uiform than to chamfer.

I will now run them all in a wet tumbler because I noted a lot of crud, and since I plan to store them till my 222 barrel dies, then load for the new barrel.

So it took me an hour to do 350 cases, not including sizing and cleaning and primer pocket uniforming.

I will not have to trim again on this brass for four more firings, and by then It will be nearing its end of life. I figure with care I will get 12 loads from it.

This is Prairie dog ammo, BTW.

I couldn't justify a Giraoud or other for this kind of numbers.

When I did 4000 308, I bought the WFT. I hardly ever use it now as I am not trimming every loading.
