He don't reload

I have a Savage 308 chopped to 20", in a Choate Tac stock, and it does what you're asking for. Not as accurate as my 6.5x47 custom for long range shooting, or as powerful as my Tikka 300WM for elk. Specific tools will be better than general purpose ones. For your friend a 6.5 Creed, 308, 7-08, etc should meet his expectations. I would opt to put together a Remage with premium components to facilitate barrel (caliber) changes.

Actually the solution was to you friends problem was solved 60 years ago. It is the Winchester Model 70 featherweight in either 30-06 or 270 Win. Go get a modern variant with a synthetic stock and put a 3.5 - 10 Leupold scope on it and they'll be all set.

Forget the fancy bling.

Potatoe, your thinking is about what I was thinking. I am a .260 fan also. I was thinking 6.5 (of some sort) with a Remy, and a Bartlein #8 LV (maybe fluted). Finish up with a Manners or McMillian.

Keep it coming guys and gals. I like the ideas. Most of them are in line with what I was thinking. I like the 87 octane comparison.

If he were my friend I would beat him daily for a week and 2x's on Sunday. If it is still his intention, add some barrel chamber a 300 win and introduce him to Black Hills, FGGM and Applied Ballistics Munitions.

Yes you can kill deer at 800 with a variety of cartridges under ideal conditions, yes I've done it with numerous cartridges. Yes I have strong opinions that I wont spread in public, based on permit culling more than a few deer.

Airing out deer at 800 with factory ammo and smaller cal. cartridges is up to you, go shoot a couple hundred and it might change your mind.

If you're going with him be prepared for some serious backup shooting, and that aint fun or easy at long range on a gimped up deer.

Just my .02

No one mentioned just a plain 280 win. My son has a stock Rem. that you can put 5 shots at 600 yards and cover with your hand but he reloads!

For your buddy's (rather unrealistic, in my opinion) shopping list, I think riflewoman has nailed it. That is about as close as you can get to what he wants to do, especially on factory ammo.

Everything I've read on your post sounds to me like 6.5 284 would probably do him just right. You can buy ammo off the shelf at most of all of your big sporting goods stores if not you can always order it online. But if he's going to try to air it out past 800 yards he's probably going to have to reload.

7mm-08 or 6.5x55 for calibers, what he can spend on the action, barrel, stock, scope, & trigger is only limited by his ability to pay.

It's the length of the barrel that gets me. With a short barrel and factory ammo , you just have to wonder about insufficient powder burn and accuracy, without reloading. Remember he wants 22" or less.

There's never a shortage of those that think money buys skill. ::) I saw it in aviation and I see it in the hunting and shooting disciplines.

One question, what is the budget? He can get a new Ruger Precision Rifle (name of the gun, not to indicate the actual level of precision) off the shelf in 6.5 Creedmoor for $1200 - $1400; and shoot all day with Hornady factory ammo for $1.30 a round.

OR,...obtain a custom build 6.5 Creedmoor with a Defiance action, Proof Research barrel, and all the bells and whistles that go with it for about $5000 plus optics; ammo cost is the same.

Is your buddy just looking to be a range snob or does he know how to shoot ? Why does he want a custom ?

308 is probably the most versatile round in existence. Sure a 7-08 does most things better than the 308, but I can buy 308 ammo everywhere all the time. Not so with the 7-08. Every able bodied, law abiding citizen should own at least one 308 anyway.

If he really thinks he is going to hunt at 800 plus yards, he might also feel better about a 300 Win Mag. Ammo everywhere, plus if you're a girl, you can buy reduced loads, which adds to its versatility.

I'd try to talk him out of the custom and into a 700, but if he's the type of person I think he is, his mind is already made up.
