Okay, a friend of mine is wanting to build his ultimate rifle. He is wanting a light(er) weight relatively short (22" or shorter) barreled rifle. He is NOT a reloader. Not going to be EVER be a reloader. This rifle is for hunting and if he wants to air them out to 800 and up. He was thinking carbon fiber (Proof research) for the barrel. I tried to give him the pluses and minuses of a carbon fiber. Probably a Stiller action and a manners carbon stock of some sort. He wants it manageable. While we have discussed MANY calibers, I would like some input from you folks to see what you think on barrel length, contour and mostly caliber. I am thinking 6.5 creedmore or .243 Winchester or maybe .260 Winchester. Which do you folks think? I am wide open and I will pass everything said and pass it on to him. For a hunting gun fitted with a 22" barrel - the 308 Winchester. It also offers plenty of distance.

SavageDasher\Larry, that was funny. I told him when (we) he started this you can't make one rifle do it all. I told him to narrow it down as best as possible. He came back with a unmanageable list of stuff. I told him to come back. This is what I got to work with. JRS, .308 is not an option. He has read enough to make him dangerous. YouTube, should be outlawed. HAHA. I agree there are better long rang \cartridges than a .308. NO DISRESPECT.

I have pressed on the 6.5 creedmore. I was thinking that it would be a great round. ESPECIALLY if not reloading. The only other round that would probably pass it IS the .308. Keep it coming!!!!

What is he wanting to shoot. A groundhog is going to have different requirements than an elk. What you listed, with no other info, I'd look along the lines of a 7RSAUM or 300wm and a decent muzzle brake. If he has the cash, 6.5x284 can be had pre-loaded too but it's not cheap.

Hey, you can get all the 6.5 creed that you want around here. SST, Amax or whatever. We have "friends". haha. You are limited to shooting Hornady with the loaded stuff. BUT, our builder shoots Hornady when factory loading. And, it will SHOOT.

First off I would tell my friend he is wasting his money and really push that point. I assume you reload so as a friend I would offer my services . . .maybe depending on how good a friend he is .

But if he wants to throw some money into a hot rod and feed it 87 octane here are some things I would suggest. I'd say just get a trued up 700 action, it would probably do him just as well and he'd be out of pocket about $550 but if he is stuck on a custom I would try to sway him to a borden or Pierce over the Stiller. Next I would not go with an over priced proof research barrel ever. I would go with a fluted Krieger (Brux, Bartlein whatever) everyday of the week over a carbon wrapped barrel. And last I'd probably have to go with a .260. .260 has good ballistics, energy, ammo is more accessible than the Creed and is accurate enough for what I'd guess your friend is going to be doing with it.

Around here the creedmoor ammo is more plentiful and less costly than .260

The "Do-All" rifle is a unicorn. You seem to know it. Your friend, not so much.

Maybe take a run at him with this set-up:

Trued and 'blued Remmy 700 short action. .473 bolt face.
Bartlein/Criterion/Brux light varmint barrel, fluted
McMillan M40-HTG (I think that's right) stock
Nightforce NXS 2.5-10
Caliber: 7mm-08

The Remmy action will be the easiest to find stuff to hang on it(ask me how i know). Smiths are abundant to work on them as well. The light varmint/fluted barrel will perform better than the carbon with some weight gain. The McMillan stock is simply the best of the best and that design is a beautiful compromise between lightweight hunting and bench/prone/tactical style shooting. The Nightforce is a great piece of glass with low enough mag for hunting and at 10x will ring steel at 1k. The 7mm-08 iis a caliber that is easy to find for hunting and has decent BC's for distance shooting as well. Very under rated(IMHO).

My thoughts. Worth what you paid.
