Hazmat shippers - price increase

So you pay 38.25 per shipment and if I order 2lbs I pay 19.95? I'm trying to wrap my head around this shipper hazmat fee because one guy I know who owns a LGS and recieves his powder and primers on pallets of boxs at a time.
We pay $38.25 for every haz-mat shipment that we ship through UPS to customers like you who order from us and we only charge you $19.95 to compete with everyone else. We automatically lose $18.30.
This isn't about our receiving large shipments from manufacturers via tractor trailer freight.

Pallets likely go commercial lift gate (or similar) delivery; can't really equate shipping charges with UPS or FedEx.

Has any other hazmat shippers seen the updated base hazmat fee from ups ?

I just had my account updated by ups via worldship and hazmat fee base is increased to $51.00 instead of $33 and will go up again to $54 in December.

Further investigation seems to suggest this will go nationwide in December…This is gonna hurt. Get ready for $100 shipping costs with insurance and signature if you’re several zones away from your powder shop

So, if the haz mat fee goes to $51, are large shippers really charged that $51 or a reduced amount? Perhaps sellers that pay a lower hazmat price can pass that along to the poor consumer?

If you read back through this thread, Amy Bruno from Bruno's shooter supply already mentioned that they discount the hazmat rate below their cost to try and help buyers.

Agreed.

What I think you're going to see is vendors selling at cost plus a few % and charging full hazmat fees or selling powder at full MSRP and discounting hazmat fees. In the end, the net - net is going to be the same
And I believe shooters will order multiple #8s instead of 1 or 2 at a time. Ordering 1 k of primers will also be a thing of the past. People will order from places that don't have 1 k limits or find local places to shop.

Whether or not a Hazmat fee is charged, and how much, is totally up to the seller as indicated by some that charge less and some that charge nothing in certain cases. No one files any paperwork with any agency and none is created by hand any longer, they are (or at least should be) computer generated automatically depending on the product. Hazmat fees are nothing more than a charge that the seller keeps in it's entirety, originally instituted to offset the cost of classifying the item(s) because someone had to physically do the work at that time. No longer, it's automatic now, and I would challenge any retailer to show a dedicated employee at work classifying and creating documents for one of the products they sell.
