Has anyone built a muzzleloader like the Remington Ultimate Muzzleloader?

I've got a friend that has fallen in love with the concept of the Remington UML, but cannot find one in stock anywhere. He asked if I could build one for him. I'd never given it much thought before, but it doesn't look like it would be that hard. It might not be to the same specs as the actual UML, but it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to make a breech-plug that would accept say a 45 ACP case as the "primer".

Anyone ever heard of doing this?

Gunsmith in Vinton Va was building them 20 years ago. His name was Richard Franklin. Used a inline breechplug and shortened rifle brass in bat, nesika and remington actions. Now technology has went to better advancements and materials.

Built one last year. Used 700 action ,Brux Barrel, Manners stock, All parts were bought from Hanks Precision. You build it just like a custom Rifle until you get to the chambering. Bore out and thread for breech plug. Using 70gr. of h4198 with 303gr. pitman bullets at 2800fps. A few other tricks when crowning, but anybody can do. First target at 100yrdsIMG_0199.jpg

I used Hankins parts and no problems. Richard Franklin uses a Knight breech plug and makes primer modules from 308 cases. Just set it up with a crush fit on your primer module. I find the custom bullets a pain. HAVE your friend PM me and I'll explain what bullets I finally settled on.

If you want an identical setup to the ultimate, I have two takeoff barrels in excellent shape with the breech plugs if you’re interested.

Just what’s mentioned, factory Rem 50 cal barrels with the breech plug. One looks unfired, both are in excellent shape. You would have to fit and headspace but would work on any 700 action.

Is there any headspacing involved in these? I’ve chambered several barrels but no I know zilch about muzzleloaders. I buy a Hankins ignition system, bore the 40, 45 caliber barrel or whatever, thread it to accept the breech plug and spin it in until it shoulders and that’s it?!?

That's it. Make a crush fit on the primer module for no blow back. I have done my own from Jeff.

I just finished three with Hankins modules and an Encore with the DIS system and a MGM 45 cal blank. I really like the DIS system but it’s a bit of a pain as you need to remove the bolt to reload/screw in a primed module. I also provided a blank screw (no primer pocket) so you can swap that in to render safe for transport.

Built one for a customer. It shot sub moa out to 600 yards. I shot it over 200 times. Replaced the breech plug after 200 rounds. Customer double loaded it and (one load over first load). It blew up catastrophicly. Had the remains examined by two different engineering firms. Both concluded the rifle was double loaded. The full length alluminum bed saved the customers left hand. The 5.5 x 20 Nightforce Scope saved the customers head and face. I will never build another modern muzzleloaded for a customer again. You can't control what they put in them.
