HARRELLS TUNER ON AN MTR

So I saw where Harrells folks were retiring--I decided to order a rimfire tuner before it was too late--Had a great phone call explained I wanted a tad more clearance so it would not scratch up barrel going on and off--he understood said no problem--about a week later tuner comes--put it on my stock CZ MTR, grabbed a few boxes of random SK RED and an ARA factory target.
I read all about the methods etc but a pal said start at 200 go to 300 and just see --I did not but ran it in and started shooting groups every rotation of 25 all the way to about 375 out---
It started looking real good at 200 out and when I hit 300 out it went BINGO!!!!! It started printing the best groups ever--mild breeze at 50 yards off a solid bench--bipod and rear bag like I use in ARA. I was Shocked at how good it went. I slept on it--came out the next morning and it repeated the test to a T with the 300 setting just killing it! It did it group after group.
So today we dialed up for an upcoming 200 yd Long Gong--light breeze--after getting elevation dialed in the rifle with that same SK Red printed three groups on the white gong that were not over 1 1/4 inch !!!
I am just stunned at how well this experiment has gone---the lot of ammo was Nothing special
I will be able to shoot it at some local matches by just going up a class or two--I can shoot the Long Gong we have in modified stock class---I am simply Amazed It took about 2 1/2 boxes of ammo --A few have said keep testing --at this point I have to say WHY? I have pix of two groups out of the 5 or 6 it did yesterday the best one and the worst one- -and when it started hammering at 200 today my jaw dropped!
I have seen folks spend weeks on testing these things--Today I shot some odd old center x and it did fantastic as well--I did note that the chrono tested speed was almost identical to the SK Red that is doing so well--so..guess I will have to test more with other speeds and see but so far it is killing with those two and a lot of SK Green I had .

This thing has shown me ...Hell I don't know what it is showing me --I have been fighting to get a "great lot" of ammo for this rifle all year long--and when I find it the thing shoots really really good but I have to work my behind off on every shot--with the rifle barrel "happy" it was bang bang bang and they all just go right in there easy as pie

One odd thing is that each setting produced a different point of impact --photo of the high group was before I adjusted it down for the next group --the one hole group was 4 shoots I did not want to screw it up

I have never had a tuner before but if I lost this one I would get another before bedtime

They would all be inside the circle but much more vertical --they were decent but nothing great
I shot maybe three or four then went to testing --you could see the groups change pretty dramatic when it got close to the happy setting and then expand out past it
It did have some tight stuff at the 200 but nothing like when it hit that 300 --it was pretty wild how it dang sure Showed what it liked

Let me put it all another way..........
I had dramatic unexpected great results from my first go with a tuner

If it repeats in future shootings you got a good tune.

DusterDave - Very impressive! Like you, I've never had a tuner but thinking about trying one. Since your experience was nice and positive, could you tell us which tuner you purchased? I checked Harrells website and they show four tuners with varying prices. Could you let us know the exact model you bought? FWIW, I shoot two Anschutz 54's, a 1407 and a 1607.

Thanks,

Jim

I simply ask for the rimfire tuner. Not a tuner brake.
I got black as a lot of posts said way easier to see the numbers. I know I got lucky with finding my setting. But… when I did it was startling It was So obvious
I have read so much about well maybe they work but no magic solution maybe you score maybe you don’t.
Not here. It was Night and Day
Hope you have good luck like I did

Welcome to the party Sir!!! :D

When I saw Harrells was closing the doors, I also ordered a tuner.

Because I wanted to try one on my Bergara B14R that's threaded, I bought the tuner plug that screws onto the 1/2x28 threads, and the silver tuner attaches to the plug, cool setup.

I have one lot of Automatch that shoots pretty good, but haven't zeroed in on where to be exactly on the tuner due to constant shitty conditions.

This is what he purchased.

I find this intriguing. Not in a position to try one at this time. Hopefully another maker is still around, or will 'step up to the plate'.

In ARA 100% of the unlimited rifles have a tuner
I just wanted to try one--I have read so much about them and many have mixed or minimal results
I think on a rim fire --since you can't tune the load like a center fire--I think it makes more sense
I realize many struggle to find the tune or sweet spot--I was all prepared to spend a month and a pile of ammo to chase it---I owe a lot to Mark Tolbert who said start at 200 go to 300 range and you will probably find something. He takes his on and off to shoot different classes at one club and it seems to work like a champ
I think I had a case of Pure Luck !! I admit that right off..
The stunning part was when I reached on out in distance it held together and surprised me and my pals that were with me. So far one of the best shooting related purchases I have made! About the price of a brick of Center X

The two pictures of results shown are promising. Repeatable results that verify the tuner was producing the desired results would support the contention that the tuner is making a difference.

Since it's human nature to shy away from failure, tuner success threads are certainly more frequent than those concerning inconclusive results or worse. The actual experience of most .22LR shooters new to tuners is unlikely to be a clear, repeatable success.

This is normal as each setting change alters the bullet's exit timing from the barrel. there are a lot of descriptions such as nodes, shine waves, harmonics as to what a tuner will alter, but simple fact is it alters the bullet's exit from the barrel. this is done by moving weight forward or back on the barrel's muzzle.

On the single hole group if you POA were center I would say you have the setting for this setup. if you can take say 5-6 different lots of ammo and all will group together then that would validate the setting.

I have one Harrell and 3 EC V2 tuner that all work great. I shoot long Range steel matches. I take my best settings at 50 yds and go to 200yds. I will fine tune there moving just a few marks at a time each way, check for the best vertical. Sometimes a few mark will tighten it up.
