Hard choices

I have two options for my next walking varminter.I have always wanted a 221 fireball since I was a teen in the 70s.I used my dads xp100 quite a bit for vermin control in my youth in Montana.I am now ready to purchase a rifle .Wich to choose though rem 700 classic blued sporter barrell and wood stock or 700 light varmint stainless fluted? Help!

I'd buy a Light Varmint Fluted in .223 & an XP100 in .221 Fireball and have the best of both worlds. You can never have to many guns Good Luck:)

The CZ 527 American is a great choice in 221 for a walking varmint gun. They are inexpensive, great shooters and have a superb set trigger that is fully adjustable in both positions. I have 6 in different calibers and all shoot great.

Glen, there is another very good option. I load a standard 223 with 12.0g of blue Dot using the 40g Vmax and 40g Nosler BT and get tiny ragged holes at 100 yards with a velocity of 3000 fps. 14.3g of blue dot still shoots ragged holes at 3300 fps. The 14.3g load sighted in 1.5 inches high at 100 yards is dead on at 200, and I am getting 1 1/2" groups at 200 yards. Work up to these loads in your rifle, because it may be different.

Shooting so little powder had the tendancy to not heat up the barrel. The Blue dot burns so clean that you only have to clean the gun every 250 or more rounds...not bad!

I also worked up loads with the 50's, but the 40's shot so well at 200 with flat trajectory, I stuck with the 40's.

The nice thing about these blue dot loads, is if you want to try for the longer shots, just pop in a full house load!

If you dropped the wood stock on a rock and put a big ding in the stock, would it really bother you? If not, get the wood stock. If so, get the synthetic. Stainless and fluting are not likely to have much of an advantage with a walking rifle.

I second the vote on the CZ.
