Hard carbon removing, help!

Alex Wheller gave the best advice for removing hard Carbon. He said Montana Copper Killer and a lot of new brass brushes. It takes a lot of elbow grease but it does work every time. There is no easy to remove carbon. Just hard work. Alex was 100% right as always.
Alex Wheelers advise was spot on for me… I do use an abrasive sometimes but not near as much as I used to. I buy bulk high quality bronze brushes by the dozen from Brownells. I clean two F_Class rifles every week using Montana Extrme Copper Killer 50BMG.. it is super strong smelling .. when I first opened a bottle I took a big wiff and it blasted my sinuses and knocked me down… dont do that.
3 Wet patches to get the loose stuff out… I’ll let it sit while I do a few ither things then wet a brush and brush 40-50 strokes.. wet patch out and take a look with bore scope.. then wet brush and 40-50 more… somewhere along there its getting really clean… may need to site awhile if you have time… alcohol it out real good when done…

Wasn’t that in the original Hoppe’s #9? I think that or something like that, that really worked to clean barrels was removed by the gov’t back in the 60’s? Everyone using it developed a twitch or an extra eye or limb? Whatever it was supposedly really cleaned barrels without a lot of fuss and muss.
I didn't have any from the 60-70s, but the stuff from the mid 80s was pretty powerful. they have neutered it. the smell alone was worth the price of admission and growing an extra finger or two.

I seem to recall David Tubb writing that he used Sweets 7.62 and an oversized bronze brush to clean his barrels…similar technique’s if correct.
Once a barrel gets on in age and copper is an issue, 7.62 does make short work of removing copper, just don’t leave it in too long.

A tight fitting bronze bore brush and a patch with some kind of proven abrasive. And a lot of elbow grease just like many have said. No short cuts. I also buy bore brushes by the dozen. Pro-Shot has some good 223 brushes by the dozen, also they make a 1 1/8" patch that works with the brush. The only time I need to go to this extreme is in my AR rifle when I shoot 10 shots in about a minute.

I've experimented with CLR on old, tomato stake barrels.
It removes the rust.
Period.
I used CLR for several months… it gets a bad rap from what it does to certain finishes on actions.. you know.. CLR is used in stainless dish washers, sinks etc etc. I friend called them and they said it was safe for stainless barrels and dont let it sit long… it just didnt work as good as the Montana Extreme and Bronze Bruss.

KG-12 removes copper much faster than Sweet's, contains no ammonia, and can be left in the barrel for a while if the copper is really bad. I routinely use a patch or 2 with Hoppe's #9 to remove powder/primer fouling followed by a 10 strokes of wet bronze brush for soft carbon, a couple patches wet with KG-12 allowed to soak for 10-15 minutes each for copper, then 10 passes with JB Bore Paste on a patch for hard carbon. There may still be some small streaks of carbon in the angle next to the lands, but I don't worry about it because it has no effect on accuracy. I use a borescope to tell what's needed and this routine seems to get the most cleaning done for the effort used.

i am just very careful with it and use it sparingly. and make sure to flush the barrel good afterwards.

Hi, what kind of patch pusher do you use? I use a jag for patches with a hole in the center, like Paul Clean.
You made me doubt when you said to pass the patch back and forth several times.

I use a Delrin jag from PMA tool and just push patches through.

So you seem frustrated about another cleaning thread… well… cleaning is something 100% of us have in common… if i were you i wouldnt have read this thread and just moved on.
I'm sure you would have. Being on this forum for years we try to encourage shooters to use the archives. I'm not frustrated at all, on the contrary a thread like this is usually good for at least 7 pages. I'm just amazed at how little shooters actually know about cleaning a barrel properly. These threads are actually good for them to learn......but so are the Archives, you should try them sometime.

I think his point is if you've read one of the threads, you've read them all.
Search Bore Cleaning and tell me they are the same after going through 4-5 pages.. I’ve done it before and just did a search and it is all over the board… SAMENESS no…..
