Sorry but did the poster here say he had any problems with the Norma or the lapua brass necked up, if he didn't the answer to his question is you aren't going to fix it with the brass he is questionable about the brass is the problem.
 
I built a 284 win a couple months ago.. bought a 100 peterson 284 cases for it and have had no trouble with it what so ever.. in fact its as good or better than any brass i have ever used.. including lapua.. i just doubt the issue the op is having is due to the peterson brass.. if it is send it back to them and im betting they will make it right.. to the op i dont know what your skill level is at the reloading bench but double check your shoulder bump with the peterson brass..

I'm really glad that you aren't having any trouble with their brass cuz I like their brass but I would be anxious to know how fat your chamber is to.
 
Im running a 28 inch criterion barrel. I fl size with a forster competition fl die.. i bump the shoulder back .002 each time.. a fired case measures .499 at the 200 line. After fl sizing it still measures .499.. no issues cycling the bolt.. kurt what die are you using to size your cases?
 
I want to show you 2 pics on brass the smaller is lapua.P.S. why would you buy special dies for one brand of brass I don't think he has a brass problem that brass is just not going to work in his chamber the Peterson brass doesn't size back far enough to prevent the click the other brass works fine so the problem he has he's got to get a smaller base die it should not be that way these brass companies should be compatible with each other.

Whidden full length non bushing click die. The Peterson brass just isn't going to work in my chamber. It's going back and just going to stick with lapua. Thanks for all the suggestions.

As mentioned above this was first time firing of the Peterson brass. It came out of the box with base to shoulder measurement of 1.800 which is less than the 1.807 of the fired brass, so essentially fire forming the brass. I have no issues with Lapua, Win 284 or Norma 284 brass. That only leaves one thing. I think I'll call Peterson and see if they have heard of this before. Have not reloaded the first fired brass to see if it happens after reloading.
 
Talked with Ben Preston of Peterson brass today. He's concerned the neck is not turned enough. As above chamber is .317 neck. Those that turn, where would you aim to turn the necks to?
 
This is interesting. Does anyone know where I can see a good description of exactly what this click is?

It sounds like it's the base causing the issue but then it sounds like the shoulder location is the biggest difference. I'm not sure how that makes sense. I'm missing something.

If you are having tight bolt close, you likely need to bump your shoulder back. Some will tell you .001 to .0015. That may work but a lots has to do with where you are measuring on your shoulder.

Bolt click on open is usually caused by expansion of the base. The correct full length sizing die will fix both and minimally work your brass.

+1 on bolt click means expanded base. If your FL resizing die isn't getting you enough clearance, you may need to find a small base die which is tighter in the base. My match chamber is tight so I use a SB die to get easy extraction

Generally yes but it depends on the die, the chamber and the pressures. I'd be happy to help if you want to give me a call in a day or so.
I see too many posts on this subject that just dont pass the eye test nor do they agree with my experiences. Im getting older and dont want to argue on the internet quite as much as i use to. Lol!--Mike E.

I totally agree with the OP about sending that brass back because I had the same issues with that Peterson brass on the project I'm playing with right now and I know I'm not overloaded and I don't have any problem with Lapua or Norma the exact same issues he's having a click at the top just enough to annoy you.P.S. I am playing wit a 30-284 Winchester chamber.

+1 on the above.......so Kurt - what is the gap measurement between the base of your FLS die and the top of the shellholder when you are getting the right amount of shoulder bump ? Feeler gages are handy for this.
