H4831SC in 6,5x284 with 140 Amax

Anyone used the above combination or experience with the H4831SC powder in 6,5x284?

I'm looking at something in the 49-51 gr region. Anyone know what V0 changes I can expect with temperature change? I get 0,7 msec per 1 Celsius with MRP and this Hodgdon powder was advertised to be "extreme series"

It was the only powder I could get my hands on that seemed suitable, I'm very unfamiliar with US powders.

When I got my first 6.5 x 284 I started using VV 560.. It was very accurate and F-A-S-T.. However, even WELL under max, it would loosen primer pockets up in 3 firings... I went to H4831 and with the 140 Hybrids, I was shooting 51.7grs... Super accurate, tight shot-strings AND 3 firings per case... By that time I had a new barrel and started with relatively mild loads of H4350... I was running 48.7grs... Accurate BUT once again>> I stretched out the primer pocket usage to 4-5 firings... So I decided to go to H1000... I was shooting 54.7grs of H1000, getting superlative accuracy AND 3030f.p.s. However, the best news is that my primer pockets stayed just as tight as new! I fired my barrel til 1400 rounds... If you MUST use H4831, be very judicious in your load development or you will find yourself buying more brass than you want to.. It is an excellent powder, for accuracy and tight shot strings, BUT if you run higher pressures in YOUR rifle, not necessarily in someone else's, you may become disappointed..

Normally between 51 and 52. DG

Yep. Im going to be on Barrel #6 this summer and all Barrels prior to.. have always shot best between 51 to 53grains with a 140class bullet. Please work up to this as this is with my custom reamer and may not be safe in your rifle combination.

H1000 was good news. I picked up a "ton" of that as well for my 338lm.

thx, will try both. You guys seems happy with it.

My own personal opinion is that H1000 is the PUUURRRRRFECT powder burn rate for the 6.5 x 284... If I could post my best group with it, I would show you.. But it is on my pics on my "flip-phone" and no way to post any pics.. But it was 5 shots at 300 yard barely bigger than the head of a push-pin">> and the pic shows it..

Thanks for the H1000 tip, I wouldn't have tried that on my own. Looks like I'll land at 860'ish msec /2800'ish fps in a 20" barrel with the 140 Amax.

MRP gives me 840'ish msec/ 2750 fps
N560 gives 850'ish msec/ 2790 fps
H4831sc was abandoned at 820'ish msec/ 2700 fps.

....those are pretty healthy velocities in a 20" pipe... VV-N160 is also a very nice powder if it's available to you , much easier on barrels than the 560.

Yes they are ok. Same lenght 6.5x55 barrels usually do 830 msec with Norma 130gr DL factory ammo, so nothing spectacular considering more than +10% grains powder used in x284.

I shot the 140 Amax and the Berger 140 Hybrid with 51.5 gr of H4831sc and a CCI BR2 primer. Both bullets shot very well with it; velocity around 2950fps. H4350 shot slightly better for me and that's what I'm using now. This was in my 1000 yd. prone rifle; 30" Bartlein tube.

51.5gr H4831sc spelled 780 msec/ 2660 fps on the chronograph with the 140gr Amax in my short barrel.

So the difference is roughly 30 fps per 1" barrel ( disregarding a hist of variables not accounted for).

It is about the same I see when I cut down my barrels. With my referenve øoad I see about 200 fps loss when cutting the Blaser barrel from 26" to 20".

Well, I've explored the max V0 and landed right around the predicted 860 msec with the 140 Amax in a tad stoff load. For comparison, Norma factory 140gr did 870 msec in the uncut barrel.

Will check on precision next.

As you probably looked up for yourself, Hodgdon show a max charge of 49.5 and 2722 fps from a 24" tube w/ 140-gr bullet (Speer Grand Slam.)

I would think Reloder 22 would be a good choice, it's good in 6.5 x 55 w/ 140-gr pill.
