Side Note: I’ve had a few gun purchases go horribly wrong between the seller’s inadequate packing and delivery to FFL. I now have a very clear conversation about how the firearm will be packaged. If I have any concerns I arrange to have an inexpensive plastic hard case shipped from Amazon to sell or for them to use. The new gun case are shipped in cardboard box, which makes it that much easier for the seller.

I haven't sold a longarm at GB in a long time, but those few times over the years when I did sell a rifle thru GB and I prepared it for the local transfer agent, I'd made sure I packed it snug inside a plastic guncase. (and an outer cardboard box to conceal what was being shipped.)

I would make it a point to keep my eyes open at the gunshows for individuals or dealers that were dumping used plastic guncases for cheap...like at $10 or $15 each. The one time that I didn't have an old plastic case on hand, I went out quick to the local store and bought the cheapest plastic guncase I could find. Spending $25 on a cheap case so that my $600-$1,000 rifle is going to arrive in the excellent condition I sent it, (even if the carrier throws it around in his truck) is worth my peace of mind. I simply add the cost of the guncase to the price of the gun and have yet to ever had trouble finding a buyer because of it. I have received a rifle or 2 from my FFL dealer that arrived with the plastic case cracked on it's end as if it was thrown or rammed into the floor, but the gun was OK.

Unless the gun is being shipped in it's original thick foam box and inside another box, it would make me wonder what other things are going to be wrong with this seller and/or the gun if he doesn't care enough to take the minimal precaution of sending it in a cheap plastic case.

Consider yourself fortunate. My FFL was $20 pre-COVID and quickly increased to $45 for firearm and $95 for NFA item (suppressor or set).

I do my darndest to do a face to face transaction. I will drive half a day to avoid all the added expense. I am mostly retired. so far, I have only traveled 20 minutes out of town, but I would drive much farther to meet the buyer or seller. Cabelas is pretty good on expenses, but the back and forth at the store to pick up the FA is a no go for me. I will no longer deal with them. Those guys asked me 15 different ways my DOB, place of birth, and they are not that knowledgeable on top of all the PIA back and forth. Fairly often they do under price an older FA, but you have to be quick to buy it. All said, I am 95% done dealing with them. When I do an in-person, I take a picture of their DL and do a bill of sale.
