Gun Writers Discussion

Thanks James. On at least a couple of occasions I have sent products back because they were not good enough to write reasonably favorable articles about. My policy has always been that you can see what I have done before it is published and I will be glad to correct any factual errors, but my opinions are non negotiable. I would tell them that if reviews seemed to be unrealistically rosy that I would loose credibility and the article would be viewed as only being a long form advertisement. Luckily there have been a number of excellent products that I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to write about.

which bias are you biased by, right?

Pure objectivity is a myth, a lie, a farce. Everyone is biased in some way. It's human nature.

Back on topic, gun writers have a symbiotic relationship with the industry and it's directly related to $$$$.

Having said that, how about that NRA rag with the Creedmoors on the cover? I wonder how much of "donation" they got for that blatant hype.

Milo,

just curious how many issues of PS magazine you ever read?
you might want to stay from swimming pools and beaches, there are thousands of men clad only in swimming suits.
Even worse, there are women there as well...

You have quite an imagination, to connect that to white supremacy. Most of them were successful businessmen as well. Married to women, so there's another lead in for you.

When talking to a buddy that did boat reviews I questioned him about an article he wrote and he replied " you have to learn to read between the lines".

Dang, get down to your range....put up,or shut up,and sling some lead downrange. What exactly did any gun rag prove or influence your results....sheesh.

No clue what PS magazine is, honestly, and doubt I will look into it.
As for the 2nd, the humor must have flew over your head?
3rd- if you were calling me the troll, been here for 7 yrs, though truthfully, I have no interest in shooting benchrest, on any level. I do however learn from some knowledgeable people here and use it when applicable.
But seems lately my interjection to forum comes in comedic relief.

Considering how the Creedmore has already taken the industry by storm, and become a wild bestseller, not sure how much of a "donation" it was worth, really.

I've had a few guys that know I'm a gun nut ask me about this new 6.5 Creedmoor thing. Like 6.5'S just dropped from heaven and it's an entirely new caliber. Well, I guess it is if you never paid attention. I'll just keep my two old Swede's that have 100 year old actions and shoot stuff. There greeeeaaaat! Barlow

.... I have no interest in shooting benchrest....
To bad... always figured you would be a blast to be around at a match !.!.!
Seems always a lot more gets conversed and in quality in person at matches, and is part of the fun factor for me. Good place to hear in-depth details and "accuracy secrets".

Everybody hacks on the Creedmoor. Well, when they put the Creedmoor out, they marketed it well, and they had guns and ammunition available. And it was all available to the average Joe, who is susceptible to marketing hype. Heck, I just bought two boxes of Federal 6.5 Creedmoor loaded with 130 Berger Hybrid VLD, for $23.00 a box plus shipping. I personally don't think it's a bad cartridge, within it's means. I understand there is a similar cartridge out there, but there doesn't seem to have been much industry support for it or marketing effort. I checked prices on it and cheapest I could find was $2.18 per trigger pull.

Marketing and hype are just part of the world we live in. Writers like to get paid for what they do and have a sustainable job. Integrity comes into play for some and not for others.

The 6.5 Creedmore is equivalent to a 250 Ackley Improved neck up to 6.5mm. They say it's based on 30 T/C, and while true, Hornady was involved in the T/C development. And what they don't say is 30 T/C was based off a 300 Savage - shoulder pushed back .030", slightly "improved" body, and a bit longer neck.

Today, I cannot even stand to thumb through one of the big 3. F&S, OL, or SA in a doctors office, rather stare at the ceiling.

Today's Sports Afield is a great magazine. If you ever see a copy in your doctors office I would encourage you to check it out.

A guy takes a lot of heat when he writes something negative about a product. I know :). But those are the articles you need the most. No one wants to hurt a business. But in the accuracy game everything is scrutinized. If you cant take the heat do not advertise your products or services to competitive shooters. If something is offered as "benchrest" or "competition" it had better be about flawless, because guaranteed its gonna get picked apart.

And it is my understanding that PO Ackley said the .250 AI gained the most velocity over the .250 Savage of any of his improved cartridges.

With the internet, unfortunately we are all writers commenting on products.

Thanks, would like to meet you and most guys on this forum. I can live with the trickle down tidbits I get from here. Just because I said I have no interest in BR shooting, does not mean that I'm not interested in the results derived from it.

ditto for the overwhelming number of on-line reviews, magazines, articles, et al. they are mostly fans boys trumpeting the virtues of their favs while trashing all competitors. i take most of these as mere extensions of press releases. i go by the mark twain quote, " believe everything you read on the internet."
