Gun Shoots Low

I think that Mark 5 and Remington 700 have the same screw spacing but different base height. I have never used Vanguard action but have some experience with the first 2. It is possible to shim the rear base with brass from hardware store but then I am a redneck. Thanks Rich

I have a Leupold VX1 4x12 mounted on a Weatherby Vanguard2 in .223 with a 1 piece Leopold base and Leupold rings. I have the elevation up all the way and the rifle shoots low. Do I need a higher front ring, or are there ways to shim the front ring. I took the mount and scope off of the gun and everything appears to be correct. I have had many rifles before, but I never ran into this problem.

Thanks in Advance.

You may have had many rifles, buy you don't understand sighting systems. The muzzle needs to point above the line of sight for the bullet's trajectory to intersect the target at the desired distance. Meaning, the scope or other sight needs to be pointing down.

You should never, repeat NEVER, try to sight in a bolt-action rifle without first bore-sighting it at the range. It amazes me how many shooters will waste ammo trying to get on paper, when bore sighting will get you on paper with your first shot.

OP,,,I think the posters telling you about the Remington 700 base fitting your gun are right,,,,,prolly the person at the place you bought the rifle thought since it was a Weatherby,,,it must take Weatherby bases,,,WRONG....check out your part numbers on the base ,,,,,since you have it removed from the gun,,,,place it on the reciever and with finger pressure (no screws installed) push it in place on the front and you should see a LARGE gap at the rear of the mount,,,prolly enuff to stik the bill of your ball cap under,,,,,there is the problem,,,,,,either shim it the appropriate ammount or get the right one,,,,this in not the fault of the bases/rings....Roger

I think the problem is solved. After trading emails with Leupold this morning, we determined that the wrong base was installed on the rifle. I purchased everything assembled and never bothered to check. The new base is ordered. We will see what happens.

Thank you for your responses

The bore of the barrel could be indexed in such a way that the off centeredness of it is causing the bullet to strike low, along with possible other action to barrel fitting.

Get a pair of Leupold or Warne cross slot bases and a pair of Burris Signature ZEE rings - your problems are done.

Listen up here ;D
