Need scope mounting help

I have a Remington 788, one piece Redfield or Leupold base. Standard Leupold rings lined up nice vertically, used ring alignment bars. I found I needed extended rings to bring them closer together as the scope I bought(VX-2 4-12x40 AO) has a very short tube. I tried two different sets of Leopold extension rings and the front extended twist in ring is higher than rear ring on both sets. Looks too high to lap out, what do I do?
 
I have that same scope on a Model 7 Remington, and it worked on my rifle without issue.
Those rings as shipped from Leupold, are supposed to work together. Have you measured them?
I don't know what is going on but some good pictures along with some part numbers might help a lot.
 
Because of issues you described I have given up on anything other than one piece picatinney rail/Weaver or picatinney rings. The scope can be placed anywhere you need it and changed easily if needed. Have never not been able to find a base (love EGW).
 
+1 on the one piece pic rail. For prone shooting the extended pic rail is the cats butt.
 
Another here for one piece pic rail... Every single rifle I have has them.... A really good pic rail with american rifle company rings is my go to!
 
zfastmalibu (Alex) taught me how to bed my scope rings with JB Weld a while back. He has the calculations to attain 20 MOA cant and everything. I have them written down as well, but they are at home and I am away at work.

You can bed the rings with shims using the mathematical equation to set your scope up for any amount of angle you want. Also allows 100% contact on the scope body for maximum strength during recoil and will never leave ring marks. Scope windage alignment to bore is nearly perfect for me every time. I have never had to adjust more than 1-2 MOA on windage when sighting in at 300 yards. Really is the best method I have ever used and probably one of the best pieces of knowledge I have attained from the members here.

PM zfastmalibu and ask him about it. I'm sure he has the math equation handy and can describe the method to you in detail.

The other option is of course a new base and rings like others have stated. The one piece rail is more ideal for this method because you can set you rings wherever you want and use the equation to get the same desired elevation compensation.
 
Another option are the Burris Signature rings with the selectable .005" .010" and .020" offset inserts.
I'm not questioning that a Picatinny rail isn't a better set up, I just want to understand why a 4x12 Leupold is too short work on a Remington action without extended rings. Also, I've installed many sets of Leupold rings and bases and never found a set that needed anything other than minor lapping. Seems to me, something ain't right ???
