Goofy Gun Slang and Expressions

A couple of my pet peeves have been mentioned. Weapon. Hornaday.

Same guys who say "Hornaday" will also say "Mondy, Tewsdy, WInsdy."

I had a girlfriend years ago with the last name Leupold. She and her entire family pronounced it "Lee-a-pold."

Surprised no one mentioned "heads" yet a.k.a. tips or pills.

The scope company used to be pronounced "Lee-a-pold" until the last 25 or so years of TV advertisers. Same as Say-ko has become Sah-coe. That's OK I guess since I was born in "Be-at-triss" Nebraska and after Be-at-triss Food was bought by Birdseye or somebody they started saying "Be-a-tris" on TV. I went to High School in Olney pronounced "All-knee", but after it became a growing suburb, the influx of elitists started saying "Oh-l-knee". Hmm, just name parts of Rockville Norther Bethesda or rename Bethesda to Potomac to sound like you live in a fancier area of the mundane suburbs.

As a person who uses the term “build” and never knew it’s a lame practice - what’s a better word to use? Project? Really I’m all about upgrading my firearm vocabulary. What’s the preferred word?

If just assembling from parts, assemble or put together, not build, as in "I put together an AR". Another example, plants where vehicles are produced from parts are called assembly plants, not build plants. Everyone's MMV.

I can’t believe this has not been mentioned.
Owners referring to their gun/s as toys; as in I got a new range toy.
Referring to guns, rifles and firearms as toys provides fuel to the anti folks.
Toys are for play, guns are not.

This and referring to rifle/gun as a she or her (Betsy). I will not read any gun article if the author does this once.

use the word build if you want. I think I lot of people would say assemble is more appropriate but who really cares?

I tend to let folks use their terms and not get offended. It simply tells me where there experience level is. If they’re idiots, I ignore them.

I would imagine having lived in Delaware you have a lot of experience in ignoring. I`m still not there yet I only have 13 years' experience. But I am better at spotting them now.

I guess if someone ask me where I got my Rifle, my reply is, “I built it”.

Granted, I bought a barrel blank and performed all of the machining functions required to attach it to the action. I did not make the stock, but performed every task that is required to properly install the barreled action into it.

I did not build the action, but went through all of the critical dimensions and firing pin assembly to be sure everything is as it should be.

Now, did I build a rifle, or assemble a bunch of parts?

I'm with you on this. You built it from unfinished parts. I was basically referring to those that put together a bunch of already made parts with no machining, fitting, modifications to existing parts or gauge work.

Be careful, very careful. Someone here is highly likely to come along on this "sight" and type a response to you telling you in no uncertain terms that you should have typed "the break brakes my ears".
