Good Oil Recommendation

Hello! I am looking to change the brand of oil that I have been using forever. I am looking for something that lubricates, stays kind of in place (doesn't seep all around like Kroil, etc.), and does a good job.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Andy

Andy....what are you lubricating......why are you looking to change from the oil you have "...been using forever"?

Good question! I finally have used a full bottle of Tetra Oil that I have had for probably 20 years... It was an 8 oz. bottle and it never seemed like it would run out. It seemed to work well, but smelled like petroleum jelly mixed with poo... It also separated out often and would need some rigorous shaking, but its was around for a long time too.

I need a good oil for keeping the surfaces of my guns clean and lubricated - rifles, shotguns, and handguns. I have Kroil and a heavier grease for lugs that I use for lugs, pistol slides, etc. I am just finishing up an order at Brownells and would like a good oil to go with it.

Thank you!

Andy

An old gunsmith got me started on using Mobil 1. I'm very pleased with the results. A quart will last for a long long time, like maybe the rest of your life. It is especially good for AR-15 use.

G-96...

A true, non-gumming gun oil, and it smells better than Chanel #5.

A guy over on the shotgun world website spent a lot of time AND a lot of his own money testing "gun oil". He bought 47 different kinds of gun oil/cleaner/rust preventative and then tested it for lubricity and corrosion resistance among other things.
Three different brands did really, really well. Frog lube, Hornady One shot cleaner/lube and one other brand which I can't remember came out on top.

Here is an article on the subject. Break-Free ranked right up at the top and thats what I use for rust protection. It's also a pretty good lubricant too. Kroil on the other hand eats rust but can't say if it prevents it.

What it boils down to is that there are about as many opinions as to what is the best gun oil / cleaner as there are people who use them. Be like the rest of us, buy them all, use them a little, and remain totally confused because they all work about equally well.
