Going to F TR match (equipment ?)

Besides the obvious of rifle, ammo, mat(don't have one yet...looking at the $50 Midway version), rear bag, bipod, ear protection, glasses, spotting scope, maybe water. What do you take to the line? What do you need off the line? I've never been to one to even watch. I looked at some youtube stuff and saw almost everyone scribbling notes and such. What are you writing down? Examples of notes would be great!
What other tips would you give a new F TR shooter going to his/her 1st match?
Thanks again,
Rmist

You'll need an open bolt indicator and your NRA number if you want to record your score. Other than that, I think you covered the requirements.
I don't take notes, but then again I don't win championships. :)

Dave,
Other than the stuff you need to shoot (and you got that covered), I carry a small clip board and pen for scoring, usually a snack and drink (eat while I'm in the pit), and hat & sunglasses (for the pit). If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

I wouldn't sweat the small stuff. If you forget something (other than your rifle!), someone will help you out. New Holland is great! See you there.

some of the notes I write are what the come up in elevation was for future reference. Wind direction/speed and how many clicks to compensate for it. Also just how much a click is in inchs or Mils, I like focusing on shooting and not trying to remember what the value of a click is.

I wrote an article for the Gun Digest 2014 edition on F-class competition with slight emphasis on F-TR. It's about 5000 words and it's even got pictures. It's still in stores such as Cabellas, Gander Mountain and similar. You might want to peruse a copy, or better yet, pick one up.

Note: I get nothing from the sale, I got paid a flat fee for the article.

Thanks for that info.

BTW, there are new copies on ebay, starting @ $10

Number 1 thing to bring to the line is desire. Have the desire to become a great score keeper. Have the desire to be the best target puller you can be. Have the desire to learn. Ask questions and accept the fact that there are more ways than one to skin a cat. Have the desire to improve your reloading skills. Have the desire to become a better shooter. You have that desire and everything else will take care of itself.

What ever you forget you'll only do it once. I keep a check list with my equipment and check off the items as I pack for the match. Problem is the list keeps getting longer. Not of things I need but things I want. Getting old you enjoy the creature comforts more and more.

Buy a decent rain suit. I keep a large garbage bag and zip ties for covering my gear in my range bag. I always keep Velcro in my bag for mirage shields and once everyone finds that out I have plenty of them asking for it. I need it too once in awhile if there's any left. Lol

More things... A cleaning rod is a must. I bring all of the torx and allen wrenches I would need if something were to become loose.

someone beat me to my answer. As a new shooter, I've found that advice like this is priceless

2-3 hired gear haulers by the time you accumulate all the stuff your gonna find out you need to bring. An 18 wheeler with a trailer might be required as well.

Would recommend bringing a timer, it's nice to know how much time is remaining when you're half-way through the match.

Couldn't agree more ;)

I have these two left:

And even yet, I have seen on two occasions shooters loaning their 'spare' rifles to other shooters (in a match) who were having problems with their own rifles ;D

Best bunch of guys anywhere!

Thanks for the info !! I would have forgotten a couple of those items !! Looking forward to a match...got to get some practice in whenever it decides to warm up a little !!
Thanks again,

The reason I brought that up is that I wrote the article as detailed introduction to F-Class competition, starting from the origins of the discipline, the choice between F-TR and F-Open, some ideas of rifles, components and so on, a little about handloading, a discussion of target sizes, courses of fire, classifications and so on. Then the latter half of the article is the narrative of a match with shooting, scoring, and pulling targets and what's expected of you.

My hope was that after someone had read the chapter, they would be able to go to a match and have a good idea of what to do and what to look for going forward.

Another excellent thing to read and reread, are the rules of the discipline, which you should download from the NRA.

Sunscreen...sunburn on the second day of a 2 day match is a huge mental distraction. Most of the gear has been mentioned.

water
lunch
sunscreen
pen for scorekeeping
extra hearing protection.
more water
insect repellent
hat
warm clothing as approp.
collapsible chair (scoring)
empty chamber indicator

a relaxed demeanor

Summer:
lightweight comfortable clothing that keeps the sun off (i wear light colored golf pants and a long sleeve tee shirt, floppy wide brimmed hat)
still more water.

i dont soft seat so I never take a cleaning rod to the range.
