Things you wish you knew F-TR and F-class

I definitely am in the buy once, cry once crowd.
Yeah, let me take the contrarian view on that.

Unless you have unlimited funds to begin with, I believe it is more important to actually get to a competition with equipment that is adequate and affordable, rather than delay showing up to match because you're still trying to save up for the latest gizmo that all the cool kids use on the line. Also, there's always new gear showing up every year and I have noticed that the prices don't seem to be going down.

Further, do not discount the concept of buying secondhand gear as you discover things and form you own opinions. Over the long run, virtually everything gets updated in this game. And that includes handloading gear.

Holy threadshift Batman! - I would like to congratulate you esteemed gentleman of the F-TR sport for tuning away a potential new competitor with this rude trashing of a real question from a new shooter. Just what all shooting sports needs. Gentle correction by replying to the post using your preferred verbiage would get the job done and encourage a new shooter as well.

Something like....Mr. Schneider, Welcome to F class shooting. There are many free ballistic calculators available on line that will help you find a minimum velocity needed to be supersonic at 1000 yards for E- targets. I prefer to be a bit faster and target 1300 Feet per second as my 1000 yard velocity. In your 140 ELD-M example, you would enter the values for your local conditions and the 140 ELD-M bullet into the calculator and select a "What if " muzzle velocity. I used JBM and typical spring time conditions for the Midwest where I live. Using 2550 FPS as muzzle velocity and it projects the target velocity would be 1312 FPS. If you have a load that is grouping well and has no pressure signs at 2680 fps, your 140 ELD-M will be 1405 FPS at 1000 yards. That is well above the trans- sonic threshold and will be detected on the e targets.

You mention F- Practical - That is a Club designation I had to look up. I think it is a great idea as a gateway to the sport to " Run What you Brung" but from the NRA rule book, F-open and F-TR are the only recognized matches. F-TR is limited to .223 Rem/5.56 rilfe or .308 Win rifles with bipod and rear bags like you have. Your 6.5 Creedmoor would be in F-open class shooting against the guys with front rests.

Well said.

The most important thing is to go to matches and get experience,as well meet other competitors, you have to learn to crawl before you can walk.It is no disgrace to get a low score and get one you will, sooner or later. As my brother said to a hopeful at the club one day who was beginning to get his gear going and thought he was ready for better things, now you have to learn how to win.

We're going to see what this weekend has in store for me. I have a 1000 yard match at Bayou Rifles on Sunday. I worked up a load with the Berger 185's and it looks promising. Also upgraded my scope to a NF competition 15-55 ( was using a NXS 8-32), got a seb rear bag, and made a board with carpet for the bipod.

Not to worry, no one is turning this guy away!! I shot with him a couple weeks ago and we should all keep an eye on him because he will be moving up fast!!

Boy oh boy.........What a difference another 400 yards makes. Went out to Bayou today and shot 1000 yards in some tough conditions, for me. Didn't do horrible and learned a lot, ended up 550-7x. I think @tvaught set a new record with 600-41x. Congratulations.
Here's how my targets looked.

Cheers to your first 1,000 yard match
It's exciting when you send your first round at 1,000, your heart rate rises as you shoot and wait for the result. (please be on paper) YES...I am on paper lets win this.

Now after competing at 1,000 comes (strategy, centering the group, and safe siding)

- 188 5x target : appears to show the centre of the group was right and low. If you move the centre of the group up and left you see you lose the 11th and possibly 12th shots but pick up 7,10,13 and possibly 9. This is where the really good shooters see and adjust their groups centre during the string. ( i am still working on that part of my shooting)
The other observation i don't see any (S) sighters on the 9:00 o'clock side of the 10 ring. Shooting a sighter on the upwind side gives you a near max floating value to bracket your wind. With this information you have a reference moa value E.G. If you put 3moa on the gun it should put you on the 9:00 o'clock side of the target.
- 185 2x target: appears to show the centre of the group was high and right. lowering and moving left may have gained you a point or two. Here you shot two sighters (S1-S4) on both sides of the X ring. Were they different values or holds.

- 177 - 0x: appears to be a head / tail wind relay. If that was the case put your rifle on ZERO and shoot your sighters in both wind flag directions to see your wind bracket. Also note head / tail wind relays produce more vertical and will need you to adjust your aiming point depending on the direction of the wind ((high) left to right) and ((low) right to left).

Trevor

Trevor expressed the sentiment correctly. I had a similar situation this weekend at the match.

I changed my 1000-yard load dramatically this past weekend, and went back in time about 8 years to my 180gr JLKs. I also swapped out the riflescope on my F-TR rig, put back my March-X 10-60X56 HM. My prior load was using a 230gr A-tip.

On Saturday, I went to my local club to make the riflescope swap. I got that done in a few minutes and started my next task, getting an MV for my 180gr load. That's when I discovered that I had not brought my Magnetospeed. Not enough time to go home and come back before dark. So set the zero at 30 inches from the bottom of the target and called it good enough with crossed fingers.

I checked the loading site at Hodgdon, used their velocity for a 24-inch barrel and guesstimated and additional 200FPS for the 30-inch barrel.

I went back to JBM with that MV and put in the environmental data that would apply the next day. I looked around for a small furry creature to sacrifice, could not find any and then gave up on that aspect.

On Sunday, I set up my rifle and waited from my relay (3). As the time approached I was increasingly nervous. We only allow 2 shots on target and if the SM does not register the second one, home you go. I took my time, aimed dead center on the target and pressed the trigger. I did my followthrough and looked over to my Smartphone. The yellow square lit up! I was on target somewhere.

Then I waited the 7 minutes ordered by the NRA as delay (ttok a nap, went for coffee and Port-A-Potty), and finally, the shot showed on the screen.

A 10 at 9 o'clock. You can only imagine my relief.

This was my first match too and my first time shooting 1000 yards. The one thing I was really sweating "please be on paper", after that I felt pretty confident and had a blast.

Just finished powder test.
