Getting into a 7mm

Buy the Berger Manual and have a resource you can rely on...

Am constantly amazed by the cheapskate morons who pay big money to have custom rifles built but are too cheap to buy a loading manual or three.

What do reloading manuals have to do with custom rifles, particularly ones intended for either competition or long range hunting? Reloading manuals are fine for loading factory rifles with magazine length ammunition. They are not relevant when a rifle is optimized for a high performance cartridge like 7 WSM. [br]
Case in point: My .300 WSM F-Open rifle is loaded with 230 Hybrids to an OAL of 3.270". Berger's manual lists OAL as 2.860", a difference of .410". That's more than a little bit. They list the top charge of H4831SC as 60.9 grains. My current load, used at Raton, is 66.0 grains. It is not a hot load. I went to 66.5 and never saw pressure but had already found the node I wanted. Not to say that their figures are wrong, they just have little application for my use. [br]
I find tools like QuickLOAD much more advantageous than reloading manuals that do not reflect my needs. Apparently, in your estimation, that makes me a cheapskate moron. :o

The Berger manual I saw did not have loads for H4350 and that's the powder I am using for mine now! Thus I did not buy one.

I reference the Sierra, Hornady, Hodgdon and Nosler manuals for the 7mm WSM. I have the data downloaded from Shortmags.org.

Hogan !Thank you sir for relieving all of the burden who either thought you a gentleman or a scholar of precision shooting. A greater question remains as to where you can go to sound your barbaric yop! and have any credibility on either issue !

I've been happy with H4350 and Win 780 Supreme in my 7mm RSAUM and 180 berger.

When adjusting you bullet's ogive to seat just off the lands vs saami over all length you are actually creating a void in the case and the pressures will be less. case in point you can put more powder to get more velocity and not increase the pressure in the chamber by seating the bullet just off the lands, but if you seat shorter than saami length by accident the pressures will be much higher.
read more info at bergers web site.
the reloading manuals are just generic "safe" load for saami length.
German Salazar has some articles on here as well, but find a load that has small velocity spread then fine tune from there.

look at the different reloading manuals if you are loading to saami lengths for their "accuracy load" this load generally will work well in any make gun as it should be at an accuracy node, you can then play around with + or - 1 grain and load in 0.2 grain to get the best velocity load, then you can play with OAL unless you are limited by magazine length.
the 7mm saum is a little more efficient than the 7mm wsm, but ammo availability is tough.
you might want to look into the 162 to 168 grain bullet by Hornady and berger.
trouble with short magnums usually is mag length limiting the possible performance if you could just load bullet seated just off the land or .284 depth in the case and put more powder in the case.
if you are building it off a long action take a look into the saum.

My 24" barrel likes 54gr of H4350, but I do better with Supreme 780 in velocity and consistency. Work up to it, this is a HOT load. I had to ream the chamber for the 180 Berger, but then I am shooting an AR-10 platform, and loading to mag length (yes had to ream throat for a mag-length cartridge. Proof that you need to work up loads).
