Getting Along w/Anti-Gun Friends and Family

BobGibson said:
There are two types of antis; The ones who know only what they have seen on television about guns, and the liberals who hate guns and gun owners. I have swayed many of the former with common sense answers to their questions and a day at the range. The latter I have no use for and do not breath the same air. Regardless of whether they are friends or family, I chose to not share my time with those I deem intolerant. If they are liberals they probably disagree with me on a lot more than just the 2A.

Bob Gibson

I am the OP, and what Bob says here is an important distinction, and one I have personally experienced. I have successfully changed minds with some common sense talk from me and a day at the range. The others simply hate who we are. They are almost always liberals, and if they could, would isolate us to some leper-like island in an effort to achieve their dream utopian world. These people are hopeless cases. All the logic in the world will never convince them of anything because they hate is an emotion, and you can't reason with it.

The biggest fallacy of the premise, "Getting Along w/Anti-Gun Friends and Family", is that "you" (the meaning of you being your personage, your essence, your existence) cannot co-exist in the same space together.

I did not mean to suggest that one could or could not get along with anti-gun friends and family. I was only raising the subject. With my one liberal friend, I find it very difficult to ignore this elephant in the room. It is like a dark cloud hanging over me. I do not how my friend feels about this. Perhaps I should ask her if she feels any tension or uneasiness due to our avoidance of the gun subject.

It is YOU that must suppress your thoughts, not them. They do not refrain from belittling your opinions... why is that?
IT is YOU that has to filter YOUR speech, not them. They are not "careful" about what they say around you... why is that?

Good question. And one we should all be mindful of. I sometimes visit the parents of my daughter's husband. They live on the border of Oakland and Berkeley and are more liberal than even that location would suggest. And of course they hate guns. At THEIR house, the man of the home is not shy about expressing his opinions, and I have raised mine since he wants to engage me. But, it rises in tone and intensity, to the point where once at a X-mas gathering, his son (daughter's husband) asked us to end it. This is his house, so he can raise what ever he wants, but if they are ever over here, I reserve the same right. I expect he will poke fun at conservative indicators around my house and expect he will engage, and it is likely my daughter saying something to tame it down for preservation of the visit.

At their house, I get sick of crap that goes like this.

Me: We have been considering moving out of California.
Them: California is a great place to live. Excellent weather, lots of culture, diversity. Why would you want to leave?
Me: Various reasons. High cost of living, desire for more space, culture.
Them: Where are you looking at?
Me: One place I was looking at was north of Houston.
Them (w/disgust): Yeah, but its in Texas.
Me: Yes, that is one of the best things about it.

Goes downhill from there.

A dialogue with that liberal friend of mine.

Me: Our neighbors just moved. I will miss them.
Her: Where did they move to?
Me: Houston. They lived there once before and are looking forward to moving back.
Her: Yeah, but its Texas. I worked there once and didn't see one Asian person for a week.

In order to "get along" with them, you must stop being you. They do NOT modify their behavior for you.

Very true, and from here on out, if someone wants to poke at me, I will poke back. They hate me, so why should I worry about preserving the peace...

I tried it when I Was young, and, first, it didn't work, and second, I could not stomach myself when I acted that way.

YOU see, this is not about lack of information - I tried the whole thing about armed people like the Scandinavians, are free, and every free society that disarmed it's people, like Cuba and Hitler's Germany, became dictatorships... they didn't care.

Very, very true. They really don't care. If they could bury the 2A violating the Constitution and Supreme Court rulings, they would do it in a heartbeat. Logic works on some, but not on the haters. In California we have a NRA Member's Council and conduct a Women on Target event, where women can come out and learn how to shoot. Guns, everything is provided. Extremely popular. Sure, most of the women are on our side to start with, and many join the NRA afterwards, but the haters, like my liberal friend, would never, ever do this. For them, there is no reasoning with.

And she would probably be first in line voting to legalize pot!

Your liberal friends are racists and bigots. If your neighbors had moved to Kampala (Uganda), do you think these liberals would have said "I didn't see one Asian person there"? If you neighbors had moved to Shanghai (China), would the liberals have said "I didn't see one black person there"? Of course not. These apologists are pathetic.

I was at an art show in San Mateo (at the fairgrounds), back when W was POTUS. A couple of elitist, smug, and supercilious liberals were sneering at the jeans and t-shirts of a couple of visitors who had just walked through their display. The male liberal said "God, where do these hicks come from?" The female liberal said "Probably from Texas, like that moron George Bush." Male says "Why hasn't somebody shot that idiot yet?" Female says "Probably because then we'd be stuck with Cheney, which could be worse."

In the parking lot at said fairgrounds, there was a car with a bumper sticker that said "Bush: The only dope worth shooting!"

This is the legacy of the left and their mantra of love and tolerance.

Wow, that's an eye opener of a read. I don't think my friends will understand my passion fully, and I shut my mouth mostly - there is not going to be an "aha
Moment" but I live in Connecticut...Nuff said.

I work in NYC, in a 6 story loft building. Not a typical gun shooters Locale, right?
My manager has house in PA, shoots his .243 off deck every chance he gets ( I load his empty brass now w some very nice free loads, even anneal it all as needed), next door at another office is Ben, drives up to Vermont to shoot on his Dad's / neighbors range, they are very well armed in VT, and superb shots
With bolt and AR, another employee is ex Peruvian military, and very proficient in side arms CQB, and I have- my special
Uh passion. Funny thing, none of us knew any of this about the other for awhile.
So minimum 4 shooters on one floor of one small building in New York City, we find our way of slinging a lot of lead. Legally. May be a sad story for some , but we are sticking to our guns. Really.

You really have experienced the bay area haven't you? It is exactly like that! Your comment on how the liberal would comment on Uganda or China is good, but I have no doubt, you would get back something like, "But that's not the same", etc. You can't argue with these people.

Are you in the bay area now?

It is a long but very good article. I started to re-post some of it, but the best thing to do is when you have time, read it.

I think it's more appropriate for this board vs some of the other post that I feel are about to get out of hand.

But one important point . . .

Yes, there is a terrible crime problem, and yes, that problem sometimes involves guns — but it is the perpetrator that is the problem, not the instrument.

Crimes are committed every day and from what I have read, firearms have a small percentage in the stat's. "Someone" made a choice to use a firearm, not the firearm itself.

I am not in NYC, but live in a major city and close to another one. In general conversation, you would be surprised how may people have their CWP (concealed permit) and are carrying as you are having a conversation with them . . . . in the workplace. I have found this to be the case in several areas of the country.

Most wouldn't believe this, but I have had it proven to me several times.
