German Salazar load......

for the 'Ole Warhorse'! This is a target I fired this afternoon from 800 yards with my old NRA Match Rifle chambered for the 30/06. German mentioned it in one of his articles as one that he has been thinking about but at the time article was written I don't believe he had the opportunity to test shoot it. I did so today. Load was 53.5 grs. H4350 behind a 190 gr. Hornady VLD, Russian Large Rifle primers, Winchester cases and bullet just touching the lands. I will test this on back to 1300 yds. eventually and the remainder of test shooting with be with the seating depth jammed into the lands. I did not care about going to center here; rather just to see how the group would cluster and it did highly well. I let one round get away from me which hit slightly high away from main group where 9 rounds impacted into an area 3" vertical x 3.5" horizontal. I have not put this load through the crony. I figured today on 90F with 54% RH and used a MV figure on the Ballistic FTE program of 2650 fps which I think was a little fast because I had to come up 2 MOA from what was predicted to be near center. No signs of pressure with easy bolt lift! It is my considered opinion that the Ole Warhorse 30/06 is nowhere near being delegated to the junk heap of history! Thanks German for the load and all the work you're doing! Keep it up!! ;D :)

Stay tuned for the continuing Saga of the Old Warhorse! ;D ;)

I have been working with the Berger 215 hybrids in a 30-06 with H4350 and H4831 powder. So far, the H4350 is more accurate, less than 1/2 minute with mv of 2650 fps. Shot a 10 shot grp of 2" horizontal by 12" vertical at 1000 using F210M primers. I don't have Wolfe but I have read that they are more consistent. Major problem for me is that my eyesight makes it hard for me to put a consistent hold with the black dot on a black bull.
The 30-06 isn't dead yet. Look at the results German Salazar has with one. You don't need excessive pressures to achieve velocity. Just let the high BC of heavy bullets do their magic in the wind.
Would like to see a lot more posts on the '06.

I'm currently using in my 30-06 24" barrel, 185 VLD Hunting bullet, Winchester brass, cci-200 primer, and 57grs H4350. My speed is 2810 avg fps, and works great. 5/ 8- /3/4" groups at 100 yards, at 320 yards gets 1" to 1 1/2"., I have this load out to 1K and my buddies were super amazed with the 30-06 at long range. I plan to rework on my 208 amax load in the winter, using Ramshot Hunter powder. I worked up a OCW and was getting 2700 avg speed. It hammers steel plate pretty well.

Used my dads 30-06 model 70 on my first deer. I do have other calibers, but always had a soft spot for the 06.

Great results, Rick! That 53.5 H4350 is my favorite load, usually with the Sierra 190, nice to see how well it works with the Hornady bullet!

Bill, you got the right plan - let the BC work for you and don't sweat the MV and pressure. BC and diamonds are forever, MV depreciates faster than a new car with a teenaged owner. An accurate load with a solid BC bullet is the key to consistent long-range performance.

The load Rick used and some others are detailed in the "Accuracy Secrets of the .30-06" series that you can see here: http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2012/05/cartridges-accuracy-secrets-of-30-06.html

There's plenty of other .30-06 info on the site, if course, just check the Articles Index when you're there.
