Garmin missing shots

Since you test and practice in the desert area, it’s very possible that something on the ground is causing missed shots. As mentioned by someone else, I’d look for a taller tripod to get it higher. Do you have a spotting scope stand? You could try it on one, it would give you lots of height adjustment to experiment.

Yes sir I tried it elevated off the ground about 3” yesterday afternoon and it worked perfectly. I’ll continue trying that and see how it goes

Thanks for the reply. This is pretty much exactly how I set it up every time. I’ve tried both sides of the rifle. The left and the right
Try elevating about 3-4” off the ground. Depending on the shape of your range, it can really help. I took some old slabs of 1” birch ply and just glued them together. I never have issues with mine dropping shots but I’ve also used it like this almost every time I practice.

Half the distance to the barrel from where it sits on the picture. Ensure the ground is flat and the radar points straight forward not down in front of it. Also, move the shoemaker access point farther form the radar. It should not interfere with it but just in case....good luck.

I think the OP has answered his own problem.
Beam clearance with the ground.
Obvious that shooting from the bench wouldn't have that issue.
We shoot from a concrete slab and the ground slopes down and as long as the grass is cut, no issues.

We usually shoot side by side and move the Garmin closer to the shooter as we take turns.

But, we are on page three showing off our setups :)

Mine has only missed a shotgun shot. From your photo, I'd bring the Garmin in a little closer to your barrel. If your blast is kicking up dust that MAY be a problem. I've shot through some heavy rain and didn't miss any. Dust????? Dunno.....
Dust would only kick up from the shot long after the bullet is downrange.

I do suspect dust might affect it if it’s generally blowing around at all times.

Random thoughts.

Has anyone noticed increased SD by using the Gray Ops cover? I'm thinking that my SD is off since using this with the exact same load I've been shooting for sometime that had very low SD. Next time I will remove and see.

Maybe the Gray Ops cover (antenna side) is not as transparent/homogeneous as the factory cover.
Could it be "noisy" to the small signal returns from a bullet?
What kind of RF transparency tests did they perform and what equipment did they use?
6BRA, a user test, simultaneous testing with two Garmin units, one with, one without, then swap the case might show some difference.
Microwave signals might have a different velocity thru different materials. Non-homogeneous materials might spread the returns ( in time). Are these 3D printed?

The layers, Garmin antenna board, air space, Garmin cover, airspace, Gray Ops cover might increase the received SWR and return signal strength and shape.

The Garmin does not have a pin point beam.
Ground returns one two or three yards in front of it will reflect some signal back to the unit.
Especially if the ground rises a couple inches yards in front of the unit.
These ground returns will be from zero velocity and will be "Returns" that the radar will have to ignore in order to pick up the SMALL Doppler signal of a projectile. Ground returns won't appear as "Doppler" signals but could swamp the receiver. Just like a large close in target.
A barn 10 yards away isn't moving but will swamp the unit.

The only time mine has missed shots was with a 243. The loads I was working with produced a tremendous fireball at the muzzle. The garmin never picked up a shot with that powder. Problem solved once I switched powder and the muzzle flash was more typical.

Mine is mounted on the left post of my NEO X and it never misses a shot. I the following pieces on Amazon:

Then just adjust the quick change base that screws to the bottom of the Garmin so it is facing forward when the quick change mount is tight on the NEO X post. It's worked great for over a year with no missed shots.

FCLASSPRODUCTS.com also sells a mount for $60 if you would rather go that route.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ground is messing with you. Getting it up a bit and no issues supports that it's something in the soil there it doesn't like. Does it or you glow in the dark after a day of shooting on the NM dirt? (lol)

Mine doesn't drop any shots, but I keep it a bit closer to the barrel, more like 8-12" and just using the little stand it comes with like you are.

Oh come on now, the government says that everything is safe. Besides, Noah lives at least 30 miles from the Trinity site!
