Fur friendly 243 load?

Fur is practically worthless right now. I talked to a buyer that I've sold to in the past, and he said that only the absolute best, xl pale white belly hides with no holes would be bought. They would be worth $5. Those are the same hides I sold 3 years ago for $100 on the carcass. So it really doesn't matter what you shoot them with right now. The market will take a turn for the better at some point and then bullet selection will be more important. I'd stay away from the light V-max and B-tips. They can be really hard on fur, especially at the velocity that a .243 can drive them. As mentioned above the 60 Sierra works pretty well but has the BC of a brick. Any of the tougher 6mm stuff will work OK with a hole in and out and a short run. About any of them work well on a frontal shot. Here's a $5 coyote that was sold for $85 on the cob 3 years ago.

Good time to make a blanket I guess!

Yep, that's about it. The only other profitable outlet for top quality fur is to have the very best ones tanned and sell them to the tourist trade if you have that available.

I’ve left a few already this year myself, just don’t want to spend the energy getting them out if they’re not perfect.

We call it a dog gun because that's all the meat is good for in some cases with shot deer.ive shot lots of foxes and deer with one.75-100grn soft point bullet.1in8T barrel.its a great round.

A 243 is not a fur friendly coyote caliber ...I used a 25-06 when I wanted to ruff em up... similar deal. Speer used to make FMJs in that caliber many years ago, and maybe Barns still does, as they used to have a 75 gr BND SPIT bullet for target and coyotes.
If you have a desire to save hides, and can't find anything for hide hunters ...a slower moving heavy bullet for caliber, of heavy construction, will do the job,..zip right through, small holes in and out...but definitely put those bullets in the vital zone.

We shot a lot of coyotes with the Sierra 60g HP, holes were not large. Of course, when bones become secondary projectiles, you get gaping holes with any caliber.

We used a max load of Win 760 in the 243 for the 60g Sierra, 3750-3850fps, holes were not big, and very dead coyotes.

^^^+1.

Drop em on the spot with a load like that. You can't sew holes if you can't find the coyote. Or searching for a shot coyote doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me anyway. JME. WD

Looks to me like for a good pelt a FMJ would be best. Used to skin coyotes that had been shot with 22-250, swift. 270 ,243and more calibers with hollow points and they about all had huge holes blown in em. Then you got a whole other problem with the fmj. Better be a good tracker. Doug

I used FMJ and hyper velocities, I tried to take shots that incorporated 1 shoulder and the vitals if possible. What I mean by hyper velocity is 3,500+ FPS with 6MM. It worked for me and I assume a head shot would work too but I was too far with the wind.

My grandson has shot, 2 nice sized, Idaho Muley's with, 87 grain Berger, H-VLD's at, 3,000 FPS from his .243 Win. and had, NO, "Exit" hole, both were, DRT at, 225 and 268 yards with their, innerd's,.."Scrambled" !
Still might, exit on, the smaller Yote's, tho,.. IDK

I shot several coyotes last year with the 87 VLD at 3000 out of my 6 ARC with no big exits.

I've also shot a bunch in the past with 95 & 105 VLD's with great results as well in several Dashers & 6x47 Lapuas.

I know a guy who is shooting an AR-10 in 243, & is over 100 for the year so far using mostly 58 Vmax I believe, but has been using the 70 Ballistic Tips & Sierra Blitzkings too.

With hide prices where they are, I'd shoot what ever shoots the best with no regard to exit size.

No reason you have to run the 243 balls to the wall either. Lower the velocities and more bullets will perform like a big game bullet than a varmint.

A FMJ is the last place I'd want to be.......

FMJ's are illegal to use in many states, check your fish and game regs.

I met a guy that was shooting a 55g Nosler with Blue dot powder, tad over 3000 fps. Sea Fire over on 24hrcampfire could give you load data on his loads with this combo.

I have had great results with the 87 V-max out of my Dasher loaded to 3000 fps. Many times no exit. But, as with any bullet, shot placement is critical. I always hold behind the shoulder for broadside shots, or dead center if they are facing me. I personally would never consider using an FMJ.
