Mike reading this and others comments just motivates me to keep working while I can and put away.
I have friends who have a new car every 3 years and I keep mine until I have no choice. My last one I had for twelve years and only upgraded to bigger truck because we wanted a camper.
I hope one day to make it to the famous Oregon fat patches and share a beer with you, Rick and other Oregon folks who have guided me along my venture

Both of us are in good health. At least for now. She's even planning to lend a hand in the reloading department as well as keep me company in the patches!

Well Mike, you've got two things going for you then. Having our health is paramount so we can enjoy what we do, and having your wife join in on the fun is an added bonus. Most trips are with just my buddies, but it's always a hoot in rat camp when a gal or two is there too.

My wife acts as my spotter when she goes along. This pic is of her with the rental rig in SD during a pd shoot back around 2000 when the shooting was still bonaroo. When in SD, WY or MT, side trips to see the cool places ripe with history is always fun too. The Custer Battlefield is one, and the firearms museum in Cody WY is also a must-see, and more fun with 'her' there. Our west is one heck of a great place to vacation, and with a target-rich environment, even better.

All good 'over here', waiting the the snow to start any day, starting the reloading of cases for the coming spring in the gun room with my hounds at my feet.




And Fern: In regard to keeping our vehicles, I drove my last truck for 39 years before getting a "new-to-me" truck that I have now. Frugality man, frugality!

i think my truck is only 22 years old with 300 plus on it. ive got a ways to go!

Back in the day I decided to better myself for my family by working for the state. Even though the DOC has hardened me, I'll sit back if I'm having a bad day and look around at what we have, and I'm very thankful. Thank you sir.

I worked for the DOC in Pendleton and the OT is mandatory 2-3 days a week, been like that since before Covid, and I don't see it ever getting any better at EOCI. They can't keep enough people due to the way they treat their employees, which is ultimately why I left 6 months ago. It was the absolute worst place I've ever worked and I'm glad I'm out of there. Sure the money was nice, but the work/life balance was crap, literally all I ever did was work and sleep and the work environment was 10x worse with all the narcissistic, macho men coworkers I had to put up with on the daily., I've never been harassed, intimidated, and overall treated like crap by coworkers anywhere else I've ever worked. The inmates were easy to get a long with and weren't the problem. I'd say with you and your wife both putting in 30 years, I highly doubt you have anything to worry about with retirement. Everybody I talked to out there said they retire millionaires after 25 years easy. I think you'll be just fine and better off than 90% of the general population. Enjoy your no OT and retirement. I know the wife and I are enjoying the more time we get to spend together and doing things I love like hunting and shooting since I left. Money isn't always everything.

Your experience mimics mine when I worked for Alaska DOC horrible coworkers I tell people it was the worse decision I ever made.

Every morning when you open your eyes, be thankful cause one morning, you won't!! And when that happens, your wife will be selling all of your STUFF for the price you told her you paid for it.

I can't see any problems, between pension, SS and retirement investments you should do well. You big problem after working those kind of hours is going to be how to spend all your free time. At least no OT will ease you in to it.

Me, carpenter, truck driver and warehouse supervisor, retired for 7 years in my late 30s and again when I turned 62. Living a great life been retired 17 years in two weeks. The only problem I see is the body wearing out.

I hear you. Call me a slow learner, but after 30 years, I finally have cut ties with management who I grew up with over the years. As soon as they hit management and drink to much of the coolaid, they forget where they cam from.

After 10 years in, this is when I realized, "if I knew what I know now, I would have never signed up for this". I was 41 then and to far in to start over.

Your right, it's the staff. Mainly management. The inmates are not a problem as a norm. Been in some rough times threw the years though with them.

Like I said, it not for everyone. Especially the direction the DOC is now going!

As this thread built, I realized that I perhaps painted the wrong picture of the situation. As the thread grew, I was able to explain the situation better though my reply's. However, I would like to set the record straight.

I am fine and will be fine. I'm not living outside of my means, I would have never set myself up for failure. I'm continuing to move forward and still plan to be 100% online by April 2027. We are grateful to have pulled a career out of the liberal state, despite it being the DOC.
