FT/R Stock---In Need of Suggestions

Is anyone running a chassis system with any success? Or are they just not a viable option if someone wants to be competitive? I'm shooting "local" matches. Nothing on a state or national level. Just having fun and trying to justify a new toy.

I am having great success with XLR Industries Element Chassis with their extreme Buttstock on my F/TR rifles. it rides the bag excellent. with a 30" heavy varmint barrel, stainless steel scope mount, Golden Eagle scope and a Savage Target action, i can make weight. with that combo, i won a Silver medal at the Worlds last year and finished in the top 25% overall. the rifle didn't hold me back, i did

she ain't the prettiest thing on the block, but she works!

Bully,

I'm currently running a MPA hybrid chassis in FTR. It's their new chassis they came out with in the last year or so. MPA is very well known on the PRS circuit for their chassis. They made a couple modifications to their light chassis model. The hybrid has a 3 inch longer forend, 6 inch aluminum bag rider (mine doesn't have any angle to it but they may be able to modify it), low profile forend design, etc. cheek piece and butt are adjustable with set screws, not thumb wheel. There are also weights they can add in the forend and butt to make it heavier if you are under weight and want to get closer to the weight limit. Mine weighs 4 lb. 3 oz with moulded rubber vertical grip. They also make another grip that is 3 oz lighter if you need the weight savings. I was skeptical at first about trying this chassis after shooting wood stocks in FTR for years with great success but after trying it i really like it. The chassis feels solid when shooting, it doesn't have a ping/ringing feel to it like i thought it would being aluminum. I had this particular action/barrel in my Doan Trevor custom maple stock and it shot great. I took it out of the stock and bolted it in the chassis without skim bedding etc. Rezeroed the scope at 100 yards then proceeded to shoot a very tight group at 300 yards off the bipod in the chassis with the same load. I've since then shot it at 1000 yards in a few matches and it shoots just as good as it did in the Doan Trevor stock. I will shoot it in Raton next month at Nationals if anyone is interested in taking a look at it. If this is something you might be interested in give Al Olivier a call at MPA and he'd be more than happy to talk to you about it and answer your questions.

Here's my setup with the chassis to give you a idea of what you're looking at for weight.

MPA Hybrid chassis (4 lb. 3 oz)
Borden Rimrock SSR action (single shot)
30 inch Bartlein 5R heavy varmint contour barrel (5 inch 1.25 X .900 at crown)
NF Benchrest scope w/sunshade and Dan Pohlabel mirage cap (very heavy scope)
Jewel trigger
Flex bipod with picatinny attachment
Mirage shield

Total weight with all components 17 lb. 13 oz

There are a lot of good options out there as everyone has mentioned in this thread. This is just another one to consider.

It looked really cool at LR Alley. I'd love to shoot a relay for you at Nats next month...just to test it out of course:D

Id go a Cerus RifleStocks F/TR stock. They just look amazing!!! I've just built a rig with a Kelblys 1M for F/TR. You don't need a full adjustable stock for F/TR I think. My current Barnard has a hybrid F/TR FO stock.

Beautiful but I am looking for something a little more versatile. I will probably only shoot this in matches but I'd still like something that I can use if I decide to do a PRS match some day (I found out there are a few somewhat locally) or if I want to do a tactical match.

Figured I would share this here as well as I've already emailed Bully.

Our A-6 PRS stock.

A-6 PRS
The Adjustable A-6 PRS shares all of the same features as our A-6, however the A-6 PRS has no butt hook. Instead, it has a 5/8" wide strait toe set at a 9 degree angle for riding in a rear bag. Its squared fore end makes it optimal for use with most tripod mounting systems as well as shooting off of barricades. It is ambidextrous and can be inlet for most Remington type actions. It is available with an integral adjustable cheek piece.

It is not on the website yet, but here is a picture showing the difference from the A-6.

It's still one under consideration especially given how happy I am with my other 2 McMillan stocks.

No, I don't have any experience with that one.
Gotcha. Thank you.

Or...
Do I just say "The HECK with it" and build an all out FT/R rifle and save the "versatility" for another gun. I have several stocks floating around and plans for a short 6.5. I can certainly use my current .223 as a plinker.
Hmmmmmm... decisions, decisions, decisions.

That would be your best bet unless you just like the frustration of compromising your gear. :)

Bully,

Build a dedicated rig. Then you won't be hampered by a comprised setup. Been there. Tried it. Now have dedicated setups. Much easier and scores are higher. Most comprise I would do is run different stocks and different barrels on one action if you wanted to go that route.
