Front Rest Debate

If money was no concern what front rest would you purchase and why?
If money was a concern what front rest would you purchase and why?
I need a new one for my newest & coolest shooting room progect to date
I value the opinions here.
Thanks Jusin

Justin,
I had this same thread going a month or so ago, we are going to need more to go on then the info given, like what discipline are you shooting, centerfire or rimfire would be a couple of things that we need to know also do you have a preference as to joy stick or do you like to twist knobs? The census was a seb neo rest but I didn't want a joystick so I chose the Ken Fulghum rest but I am also going to order a rest from JJ Enterprises they were the top two picks for rests with knobs. Here is a link to my thread, enjoy and good luck!.....

I had a Caldwell BR for a while, wasn't happy with all the slop it had. I searched for a while and ended up going with a Farley Coxial II.

I was a little indifferent going with the joystick, but now that I have it I love it.

I shoot F-open by the way.

I don't think you can go wrong with a SEB NEO or a Farley.

With out a doubt a JJ rest with a Shade tree top would get my vote the best of both worlds. I sold mine and i have been kicking myself for doing it. I now have the new Sinclair with a shade tree top and i"m back in bussness. I use the top for windage only but it can be used for elevation if needed and you never move your hand and the best part it shoots the same place with your hand on or off the stick. Plus you have the windage knob on the rest for corse adj. and the windage top to use after center up...jim

My first rest was a Caldwell Rock (not the BR). I added a ShadeTree top from Butch and life was good. I then bought a Cowan rest (Altoona Trade School) and added a ShadeTree top. Life is really good. Depending upon what I am shooting, I use the windage top that came with the Cowan or the ShadeTree joy stick top. I sold the Caldwell because it wasn't getting any use. For my money, a ShadeTree top with a good base is as good as it gets.

I first used the Bald Eagle rest with a speed screw for F class and long range benchrest and it was quite light to carry, but then the joystick type became more prevalent here in the UK for f class etc and I bought the Farley and although heavy it works for me. The new Seb Neo is also popular here and looks the business, but is expensive. A shooting mate of mine uses a cheap add on top to the 3 legged front rest and that seems to work very well for him, so you do not need to spend megapounds/megabucks.

Cort,
As soon as my Fulghum rest gets here (today supposedly) I am going to upgrade my Caldwell with one of Butches tops as well, I am glad to hear your happy with yours.

A side gig of mine is tuning and setting up rifles. Most all are for Long range hunting. So recently I built a new reloading room in my barn and pimped it out. I added a shooting window for instant results & installed 4x4x2 targets at every 100 yards out to 700. The targets are a steel frame with ply wood front then I filled with chopped up tires to stop the bullets an they work great! Now I already have a 1600 yard range 1/2 mile from here but it's hard to access during the winter months & Its not heated, but now i have a heated place that I can shoot yr round. So I need a rest that can acomidate many different center fire rifles that adjusts quickly with plenty of travel and will last a long time. I have not used the joystick rests but they look really intreaging. I will post some pics later tomarrow. Im not afraid to spend the money for a quality rest.

Well my friend look no further, I just received my Ken Fulghum rest today, it will accommodate from a little over 4" down to maybe 1&1/2" wide forends with just a few turns on a knob, it's that fast, check them out. On the top of the rest are two small black knobs,..loosen them and then on the sides is a knurled aluminum knob on each side turn one of them and the rest top widens or narrows, when you get it where you want it re-tighten the black knobs, it's that simple!

Oh' one more thing the rests are about $930 delivered now! Also I have the almost same setup you do, I boxed in a 12X24 section of my machine shed and divided that into, one end has my lathe and tools and the other is well insulated/heated/air conditioned room complete with all the state of the art loading equipment and a window I can go well over 800 easy and if I step out of the room about 4 steps I have a bench I can go to 1780 yards ;D congrats and best of luck on a rest.

P.S did you get through any of the posts on the thread I provided for you?

As you can see that cheep rest I have just don't cut it..

Since you said that you are setting up long range hunting rifles, I will disagree with those that suggest that you use a rest and bags that were designed with a target rifle in mind. Friends, who have rests that are suitable for benchrest competition have found that for rifles that are not stocked and balanced for the bench, something else works better, in terms of results on target, and consistent performance. One has a Bulls-X bag that he uses in front, and the other uses a combination of dog-gone-good bags. The main issue with these bags is their lack of provision for vertical adjustment. If I were to start using one ( I primarily shoot a bench rifle.) I would design and build a sturdy platform that let me adjust height and angle. The small bags that target rests use tend to be too hard for many applications, and the same can be said for most rear bags.

Buy target style bling if you must, but if you want the most consistent performance with the kind of rifles that I am guessing that your customers hand you to tune, I would suggest that large soft bags that do a lot of vibration damping will perform better.

If you must have bling, get one of these. http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=33651/Product/JJ-Industries-Ultra-Front-Rest
Every detail is superbly executed. Then after you have found out that I was right, you can keep it to impress, and shoot off of the more pedestrian. ;)

You were posting your pictures while I was writing my post. Looking at them, you are to be congratulated for building such a neat, squared off shooting/reloading room. I have a couple of suggestions. You may enjoy something that is adjustable in height to sit on while shooting, and I would consider that some sort of arm rest that extended back from the edge of the counter would make for a more relaxed shooting position. Are you planning on wind flags?
