Forming 250 Savage cases from something else?

I'm in the process of building a benchrest rifle chambered in 250 Savage.
I have some Hornady 250 Savage brass, but was wondering if there was another cartridge that can be formed to 250 Savage, but has better quality brass.

You can use .308 or just about any variant. Done it many times. I formed a couple hundred of them out of Lake City Match brass. Just go slow trim the cases and turn the necks.

Would rather neck down, vs up from 22-250.
Just me.
I didn't know if i could form from 260 Rem or (gasp) 6.5 Creedmoor.
Hoping to use Peterson brass.

How about some new Alpha Brass !! I have 100 pieces of neck
shortened 260 (LRP) brass that was slated for another project.
The 250 Savage cases are 1.912 OAL and these cases have
been trimmed back to 1.925. If your not in a rush, I'll have em'
at Anderson Creek for the June 5th match.

I'm willing to try!
Maybe we can make a trade for the 7mm bullets i'm getting off of Jeff.

I still would like to get some Peterson brass, seeing as to they are local to us, and i like supporting local businesses.

Barrel should be in about when the match in June is. Mock up & off to get the stock built.
So i'll still be shooting my wife's 223 for the June 5th match. :(

I just dug em' out of storage. I forgot I had already formed
a 30 degree shoulder on them. Should be real easy and
enough case to bump them back. It's a shame I no longer
have my 250/3000 dies. I'd have em done in short order.

Please note the amount of body taper in the .22-250 and the .250 Savage. Compare that to the .260 Rem.

Next look at the diameter of the lower case body at the .200" demarcation.

Now check the diameter at the shoulder.

Now compare the dimensions with the .22-250:

Howdy !

If you want to obtain brass w/ .466' base diam, there are a couple of cases that might work.

One is ( perhaps ) 6XC.

The other case would be the 7 X 64 Brenneke. It is .308 bolt face compatible " rimless " .
It has .466" base diam.

I use 7 X 64 brass ( Norma ) for my " DEEP 6 " wildcat. For that wildcat's chamber, a 6mm Remington reamer is run-in " short "; to arrive @ .466" base diam. The Norma brass has worked really well, for me.

I think your idea of going w/ a accuracy rifle chambered in .250-300 is brilliant !

Thank You all!

Looks like some squeezing & trimming.
I've formed 6.5mm Rem Mag from 7mm Rem Mag before.
This looks much easier, as long as i can get the sizing die down close enough to the rim.

I wonder how the Creedmoor case compares?

Your best bet would be to skip the nomenclature of .250 Savage and go straight to the .25 Creedmoor. You might wind up with just a pinch more case capacity but nothing significant. You will wind up with superb brass from Peterson.

If you choose the other direction of DIY from the suggested cases, enjoy the process. We used .22-250 Savage to make 6XC brass a long time ago because we could get Lapua brass.

Kenny......Doing some number crunching, and going thru
brass inventory, I may have a cheap solution for you. Do
you have your dies yet ??

My own unjustified worry about getting the neck too thin, or splitting.
No actual experience with it, just a quirk that has no logical reason.

If going from .224 to .257, do a middle step of .243 first?
Anneal afterwards?

I campaigned 6/22/250 for a couple of years in NRA high power competition. Never had a problem with thin necks. I even turned the necks of some of my 600yd brass (didn't really help). Probably made close 1000 cases. Lots of 22/250 brass to choose from. Tons of 6XC brass made from 22/250 brass.

Just a thought....

Since you are going to form cases for benchrest, you may want to use parent cases with small primer pockets. I know they are available in .308, not sure if there is any SPP .22-250 brass.
