Forming 250 Savage cases from something else?

You would end up with a slighty short neck to catch carbon.
I'm reading 1.912" case length for the 22/250 and 1.89" for
the 6XC. Not sure if the reforming process would drag the
material even shorter. Maybe see if anyone has the a piece
or 2 to sacrifice......And I would not worry about that extra
.002" smaller base on the parent 250/3000 case until you
measure the chamber that's coming your way. What does
your base measure now after FL sizing ??

Howdy !

If your dies allow you to readily do it,.... then I recommend you perform the intermediate .243" neck-up.

If you intend to case form using new brass, I recommend you forego annealing.

But hey, that's just me.

Messing around at the reloading bench today. Found a 308 Win casing.
Lubed it up and ran it through my 250 Savage FL die.
Base came out at 0.465". At the shoulder 0.413".
Both same as my Hornady 250 Savage cases.
Obviously i needed to trim. And a fair bit!
Neck measured 0.288".
Would not chamber. Loadedneck on the Hornady measures 0.283".

Thinking if i turned the neck, a 260 Rem, or 243 Win may work.
Need to get a neck turner.

Going by my numbers, and it looks like SAMMI's numbers
are all over the map since 1915.....Neck should be .286.
What does a fired case tell you ?? As for the base ?? It's
sized a tad small. As I mentioned, measure the chamber
when the barrel comes in. With your base at .465 your case
life could be short. I'm not surprised the .308 is fat at the neck.
That's quite a it of brass being crunched......When is that
barrel due ?? I have some die work on the lathe to do this
week. Going to carve up some taper wall sizer's and a
.284-ELF FL die. I was fire forming thes case at the last
Anderson Creek UBR match.

Know anyone in your area that would chamber cast your
new barrel ??

Yeah, i wasn't too surprised at the neck dimmension either.
Actually, thinking of taking the expander ball out of the die & see what that gives me.

I have the once fired Hornady brass, that hasn't been resized yet from my last match from Anderson. I'll measure & post.

One thing i did notice is there is no ring at the base from where the FL die stops. Seems like it does size the whole way to the extracter groove.
 
Ok,
I took the expander out of the FL die.
Neck now measures 0.279" on the resized 308 casing.
Still won't chamber in my Stevens 200.
Laid a straight edge along the body.
It lays flat from the shoulder to just over half way down the body.
Then there is a slight gap from there to the base.
Guessing, yes, there is an hour glass to it.
And here i was so hopeful! :confused:
 
I tried using alpha 25 creed cases to make 250 ai cases and ran into extraction issues. The creed cases are .470 at the .2 line and savage .467. They sized fine in the die and chambered snugly. After fire forming, several, not all would not extract and some had the rims ripped off from hitting bolt handle with my hand. Tracked the problem to the extra .003 on the lower body. Tried this with 243 win cases also and same issue. Just to test my theory, I chucked them in the lathe and turned off .004” and problem went away. It seems that those that would fit in chamber would swell Enough at the solid head to stick in the chamber but after turning it wasn’t an issue. I havent given up. My next effort will be to turn down a shell holder to get my 250 die lower on the case and make a few sizing passes over the case head. A 250 or 22-250 small base die may help also but I haven’t been able to find one. I have read where others use the creed cases for 250 ackley without issue but I can’t seem to make it work. After some experimentation, i've come to the conclusion that i'm either using Hornady 250 Savage brass, or necking up 22-250 brass.
If i neck up i can use Norma or Lapua.

Going to the scrap yard today with 3 buckets of range brass. Yeah,
some of it will be those 250 Savage trials. Some how I feel defeated
on that project, but it will come around again I'm sure. Maybe a
winter project ??
 
SeaBee, check on Long Range Only for the story on the 6.5 PRC, click and extraction problems after several firings. You created the same situation when you tried the larger diameter case. There is not enough expansion room for the case in that chamber. The fix for the PRC is a reamer with a larger diameter at the .200 line.
 
22.250 brass in Remington worked for me with 250ack . No neck turning just neck up and fire formed With the lot of Remington brass i was using found it very constant . Did try norma but doughnut issues and didn't want to neck turn . Have some laupa brass in 22.250 but haven't tried it yet
The Remington brass was working so well I see no reason to change

Exactly where I ended up. Necked up Lapua 22-250 to 26 cal, then back down to 25 to create a false shoulder that exactly matches my chamber and die setting and everything is perfect. Driving 75 hammers to over 3500 fps and no issues

Hornady is making 250 Savage ammo and brass. I think Midsouth shooters or midway carries them.
