Fluke Shot

My son went to a 100 yd range the other day, when his regular range was open only to LEOs. Anyway, he had something happen, I've never see before. Shooting 300 wm with 210 gr. VLD, he had a ricochet off the berm (10-15') and it came back thru his target board. Well actually, thru POI of the shot.

How could this happen? There had been rain earlier and berm was wet. 2,770 fps @ 100 yds? Hit a bullet in the berm? 1496.jpeg 1489.jpeg

I think what happen is the bullet smacked the mud so hard the mud splashed back and it turned the edges of the bullet hole backwards.
Kinda obvious with the mud splatter all over the back of the target.

The mud did not contaminate the actual area where the bullet and/or jacket pierced the target. The edges of the tear were clean, but anything is possible, I guess.

Did he retrieve the bullet? If not I'd put my money on mud, clump of dirt or even mud and a rock.
There's a video that shows a guy getting whacked by a 50 bmg after shooting a steel target. Bullets travel and not always in only one direction when hitting objects that can deflect them. I still have the dent in my leg from such an episode.

He did look for the bullet, but RSO was impatient. When the target was pressed flat, the hole resembled an expanded bullet, more or less length wise. The berm was clay, but I'm pretty sure there were many other spent bullets residing in it, or it could have been a rock. Just thought it was interesting.
