Damage like that I have cleaned the crack, then came back put a very little amount of fine wood dust and True Oil or other finish mixed in the crack. knock it back then touch up with colored wood markers starting very light in light areas then progress to get darker area to match darker grain. Get them in the cabinet area of Menards, Lowes etc. Once you get onto it you can get a fairly good match or at least so it is not so noticeable. Once you are satisfied use more finish and just work it back in on to the crack repair and blend it into the existing finish. This is all assuming that the original repair is stable and will last.
Touching things uf with paint or markers works very well. You can use fine tipped markers to draw in grain pattern etc. A great person to have do this if you know any are antler and tine repair (taxidermists usually) specialists. I have seen them build up huge portions of a tine or rack and you would never know it was not original.
