Stock repair/refinish QUESTION

I have guns I have had for years that are still in "like new" condition and I try very hard to protect and keep them nice. HOWEVER, last year I bought a Remington 7mm-08 CDL that I liked and about 3 days later found a scratch in the stock that I KNOW wasn't there when I bought it....I don't know how/when it got there or whatever, but it is really bugging me and I want to repair it. The thing I am wondering about its what method/products/type of compatible finish and so forth to use so as to make it all nice again and NOT either make a mess of it or have to "re-invent the wheel". Anyone on here familiar with the Remington stock finishes and had any luck doing a small area repair/refinish on a CDL 700 that has a "satin" looking finish on it?

Thanks!
