First world problems: loud Steel

So I've noticed the various steel plates I shoot in the yard have very different sound signatures... this is for subsonic supressed shooting..

The 3/8 in thick 8-in round plates ring really loud... and the two 7-in plates that are half inch thick, one is much quieter than the other.

Im wondering if that is the grade of steel... or if I can modify the loud ringing plates... drill some holes in the plate.... or tack weld some steel to the back of the plate.

Trying as much as possible to keep the noise down, so the neighbors (300 ft away).never hear it

Both

Shoot paper instead of steel.
I thought the whole point of shooting steel was to hear the hits.

Im ok, hearing the hits.... AND seeing the plate move, AND seeing the impact thru the paint removed. Paper doesnt do any of that.

As I said.... I want to minimize my neighbor 100 yds away hearing them. This thead is about quieting LOUD steel, not creating SILENT steel.

Get rid of the neighbors! :p:p

All jokes aside my experiance has demonstrated that many things change the sound of steel. A large gong hit with 165 grain 30-06 at 2900 FPS dinged at 200 yards. The same gong, same distance with a 265 grain 444 Marlin at 2100 FPS (BTW the Marlin and Springfield have very similar case capacity) the tone of the gong DONGED!

I still advise that you get rid of the neighbors! :D
