First time reloading 6ppc

I've got a question which is prolly been beaten to death but hers it is.. the only precision rel8ading I've done is for 6.5 creedmoor and I know this 6ppc is a different cat....
I normally would load up some rounds with different charges but the same over all length. Once I find my nodes i go to different seating depths and find what works best...
Now i have some load data on the rifle from previous owner but the bullets used are no longer made..
I will be getting a new barrel put on mid summer so not sure whether to try to dial this one in with a 68 avenger bullet or wait..
I want to get used to shooting the rifle and the light trigger it has but also want a accurate load..
Honest opinions wanted..thanks

I have had good luck with a wide variety of bullets from 62 gr to 70 gr. all with N133 which I know you don't have. I am sure you can find a load with the powder your using and any good bullet in the range I mentioned.

Well I've got 2 I'm working with... 68 avenger and 65 grain flat base..
Goin to 28.0 h322 with the 68 grain bullet and prolly go up half a grain or so for the 65..
Both are seated jam at the same depth ..same ogive point

ok so load up 30 or so rounds with a light medium and heavier powder charge
h322 for example 27-27.5-28 grains 3 rounds loaded at each weight
repeat at 3 different seating depths to start with working back from jam or in from touch .003 at a time
shoot this on the same piece of paper
you are looking for a seating depth that shoots well at all 3 powder weights

one other thing, that you may already know. Don't even think about doing testing those loads without wind flags. One you learn how it shoots and find your load, then you might see how far the wind will blow them, but even then you will need flags.

The powder in this test is LT32

I was going to say this but with the component situation we have, I just didn't. Even Tim showed a proper test, but with the primer situation you may want to cut that a bit short and revisit later as things ease off. If you are sitting on a buttload of small rifle primers, go for it.

I've got 5k srp atm so I'm good to go

Here's my method for a PPC and most others.

Wind flags are a must, obviously!

Start with the bullet .010 'into' the lands (done with the stripped bolt//0000 steel wool/bullet marking method). With the bullet 'into' the lands .010, you've only got one way to go...out. I start with a neck bushing .003 smaller than the neck measures over the p.r. of a seated bullet. With the powder you're testing, shoot two foulers and then:

- Go up in charge weight in .5 gr. increments, shooting 3 shot groups.
- With the charge wt. that gave the best group, load three more and repeat. Clean the gun and fire two foulers with the same powder you're testing. Then:
- With the best charge weight, fire 3, then back the bullet up .005 at a time, shooting three shots groups at each seating depth until the groups get markedly larger.
- At the charge wt. and seating depth that shot best, load 5 and shoot. If all looks good:
- Change the neck bushing .001 at a time.

If the conditions are reasonable and you're hitting the flags consistently, 40-50 rounds should be all it takes to get there....maybe as little as 30 depending on how things develop as you test. You can always go back and tweak the seating depth .002-.003 and the charge weight by .2-.3 grs. later on.

As a final test, I shoot a 10 shot group at both 100 and 200 and evaluate where the center of the group develops, relative to the aiming point.

Good shootin' :) -Al

there are many things you can practice with your old barrel.

bench technique- sitting correctly at the bench
rifle handling at the bench- how you work the bolt
bag set up and removal= dont over look this
watching the flags with one eye

cleaning - with out wasting time
loading with a minimum of effort and movement
these are important so you are not rushed to get back to the line

luck-ray

Where did you start with L32? Using 68 gr Berger’s, N133 and H322. Hitting 3150, would like to get in that ball park with LT 32 as I’ve more of that. Any help appreciated.
I am shooting a 68bt with 28.2 lot#3 of LT-32 br-4 primers at 3300ish. I would start at 27.5 of your lot of LT-32, which gave me 3145 with my powder.......Have Fun

Rick

Shot this 11am today. 5-8mph wind right go left. Pleased.

Is that 5 shots or three?

I've shot plenty of H322 out of my PPC's. I do not know velocities, but what I will say is that H322 is pretty good stuff. 28.4 is a pretty mild load IMO. I'd consider that a good starting point and work up from there as long as you are not seeing pressure signs. I've run a good bit hotter in my Panda with H322 and Berger 68 FB. Keep testing at small increments.
