First solvent application when cleaning

Do you just use a loose wet patch, or do you use a saturated bore mop ?

Whats a bore mop for? Just a gimmick? Or does it have a legit use ?

Thx.

Reasonable.

Whats a bore mop for, then?

Doesnt seem like they could be used without dirtying them.

So I watch a lot of videos and I am way different than most but here goes. For a rifle I like to use a bore mop saturated with cleaner to get everything wet and soaking. Two choices being hoppies or mineral spirits. A mop is easily cleaned in mineral spirits and I use a bunch. It's the cheapest easiest way to clean. For pistols i soak the entire barrel and slide. Not very harsh on your hands and decent smell. To each their own.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Some reading I did recently suggested using a loose wet patch to get the majority of the priming compound and carbon residue out of the bore without grinding it against the barrel.

Then I thought the bore mop saturated with solvent would be a good way to coat the bore so you could let it sit and dissolve residue.

Being able to clean the bore mop with mineral spirits seems like a way to make it feasible.

@daleboy ... lol. True enuf.

Shotguns... maybe a legit cleaning method. Precision rifles?

One author I read cited the highly abrasive properties of rim fire priming compound as almost like a glass/sand lapping compound.

Call me crazy but it seems like a badd idea to use a mop that attracts and holds that compound and running it up-and-down your bore.

I use a piece of monofilament fishing line to pull a dry patch through my barrels first then pull a solvent saturated patch through and let it soak before pulling clean patches through.

Sounds like it has alot of advantgages.... if you can get the fishing line down the barrel... :)

Sounds like it would be a lot more difficult then just using a jag and a cleaning rod

Actually not. I use 50#, cut it about 2 1/2X the barrel length, tie a knot on the loose ends and crease it in the very center. It feeds down the barrel with no issues. Pull it out of the receiver enough to fold the patch and pull it through the barrel. Pretty simple and fast. The only time I use a rod is if the rifle needs a brush ran through it.

I use the same line to clean my Feinwrekbau air rifles, there is no way to push a rod through the breech end.

I shoot, 17 HMR and 20 VT. I cut a standard cotton swab, like a Q-Tip, in half, soak each with a solvent and push them through the bore. Later I'll use patches or additional swabs to finish up. I use the large swabs, the ones below, from Amazon to clean the chamber, action, etc.

If you can’t get into the breach end that definitely would make sense I see what you mean about tying it in a giant loop you can switch patches out pretty easily kind of like a bore snake but you get to discard the patches

@K9TXS .... for a 20" rifle barrel? How do you push one of those through the bore?

I use the small Q-Tips for the bore. Cut it in half and get it started in the bore guide and I use a dowel rod to push it through. The larger ones are used on the action. I have regular cleaning rods, but seldom have to use one.
